Past i-Teams projects have scooped three prizes in this yearâ€™s Cambridge University Entrepreneurs Â£1k competition and teams including i-Teams alumni won three more. Many many congratulations to all the winners!!!!!
The successful i-Teams entries were:
Camses (Giorgio Divitini & Caterina Ducati)
We developed a catalyst based on TiO2, a standard industrial material, that can exploit both natural and artificial light for degrading pollutants in air while also killing pathogens. The efficiency is much higher (at least 10x) compared to pristine TiO2 and other catalysts on the market or in the scientific literature. A team of 7 people is working on commercialising the IP, conducting R&D until a licensing agreement can be achieved with a major international company. This will constitute a "low hanging fruit", which will be leveraged to further R&D and novel applications. i-Teams Michaelmas 2012
Sensor Hut (Tanya Hutter & Marc Stettler)
There is a growing demand for robust sensor technologies to be used in chemical process control, mining and homeland security. In addition, increased awareness of the toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has led to lowered exposure limits and increased requirements for direct measurement. SensorHut Ltd is an earlystage startâ€up aiming to develop innovative sensor technologies for the measurement of VOCs. Our patent pending platform technology is based on a lowâ€cost nanoâ€structured optical element and fast optical detection.
The technology can be easily adapted to detect certain compound of interest and thus can be used in various markets and applications. i-Teams Lent 2013
Hydrogen Sponge (Enass Aboâ€Hamed, Jonathon Blackburn, Shin Nikkuni, Pu Zhao, Selina Wang, Luke Sperrin)
Hydrogen gas for use as a clean fuel is a multiâ€billion dollar market. The hydrogen economy has been a part of an envisioned clean energy future for decades, yet significant hurdles remain in seeing that vision become reality, due in part to difficulties in storing hydrogen. We have developed a novel â€œspongeâ€likeâ€ material that catalytically produces and stores hydrogen gas at room temperature, and on heating releases the hydrogen in a safe and onâ€demand manner. The material is recyclable numerous times; furthermore, the gas release temperature can be modulated, giving the flexibility needed to suit various applications in different industries. i-Teams Easter 2013 & Michaelmas 2013
i-Teams goes social (social sciences of courseâ€¦)
In Easter 2014, i-Teams is running two social science projects for the first time. This reflects a general shift in focus within the social sciences, as has already happened in the fields of science and engineering, towards looking at questions of impact.
The first project looks at how to use new digital media technologies to enhance teacher training and professional development, while the second looks at how to best build collaborative networks of individuals with common interests. Both concepts will eventually use software to deliver their vision, but the focus of the i-Teams projects is who would need and use the products, what would they use them for, and why.
We are aiming to recruit mixed teams of students for these projects, to include social scientists, humanities and some scientists and engineers. The teams will work for a term with a dedicated industry mentor, looking at the commercial potential of these new ideas, and gaining hands-on skills and expertise.
Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship
Many congratulations to Dr. Sithamparanathan Sabesan for being awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellowship!
Dr. Sabesan worked with an i-Team in 2009, looking at possible applications for his long-range RFID (radio frequency identification) technology. Since then the technology has been further developed and trialled with customers to create a new goods and luggage tagging and tracking system that can pinpoint items with near 100% accuracy and over a much greater distance than existing technology. The PervasID system has the potential to save airlines millions of pounds annually through allowing frequent fliers access to fully automated self-check-in, and to enable high-value goods retailers to benefit from secure self-service checkouts.
The Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellows receive up to Â£85,000 of funding to spend 12 months exclusively developing a spin-out business based on their technologies. They also receive ongoing mentoring and support. Other i-Teams inventors who have been awarded Enterprise Fellowships include Dr. Damian Gardiner (i-Teams 2013) who is developing new printed laser technology, and Dr. Adar Pelah (i-Teams 2007) who is commercialising the StroMoHab system for stroke rehabilitation.
