This Week's Spotlights

Money Story Sermon Series

We are invited to discover and tell our money stories in light of God's money story of liberation and justice. We will be invited to transform our stewardship practices into more full expressions of who we are and what we believe. This stewardship season, we invite you to remember, release, reimagine, restore, and recommit your money stories so that we can write the story God is begging us to live into.
Creative practice - we are creating a mural, and we'd love for you to participate!  There are two ways to be involved:
*Pick up a creative packet, complete your pieces, and either return them to worship, drop them off in the office, or arrange for a pick up.  We'd love for everyone to be involved!
*Join us for creative hour each week. We'll meet at the following times:
October 7 - 1pm
October 13 - 6pm
October 21 - 1 pm
October 27 - 6pm
Each of these sessions will also hold the opportunity for sharing in study scripture, prayer, and conversation!
Facebook Live - Join us at 11am on Wednesdays during October for scripture, prayer, and conversation!
Policy Update from Your Pastors:
At Tuesday's Ad Council meeting, the team decided that we can pause/stop requiring registration for 10:30 worship.

We remain committed to caring for our neighbor:
Let's stay vigilant in our efforts to protect our community.  Please remember that any person over the age of two must “mask up” before entering our building, regardless of vaccination status, and remain masked for the duration of your stay in the building.  Masks are available if needed.
We are all called to the ministries of serving, caring, and connecting with one another safely. As Delta surges continue, may we change more and more into the likeness of Jesus.
Stewardship Team

At the end of last week, the stewardship team sent out letters about the new sermon series, some creative discipleship opportunities along with a bookmark of scripture and stories to accompany the series--hopefully you received them!  If not, there are more near the worship area.  If you are worshipping virtually, please call the office, and we can mail one out to you.
This is a great time to update your information if you have recently had a change in address or phone number.  Call the office or email to update.
Policy Update for Linworth Children's Center (LCC)
We will be requiring all visitors, parents, and staff to be masked until recommendations by local health departments change. We strongly recommend that parents send KB and K students in masks. For below KB, masks will be parental choice.
World Communion Day

This Sunday, October 3, 2021, we will celebrate World Communion Sunday. We look forward to this celebration each year on the first Sunday in October. It is a time when we participate in holy communion together with others from around the world and share our gifts to support racial-ethnic students and trainees in their quest to become leaders who embody the mission of The United Methodist Church. If you would consider giving toward this Special Sunday, please know that your gifts provide scholarships for ethnic students and trainees from the U.S. and around the world. To give, you can visit or write a check to Linworth UMC. For more information about the impact that your World Communion Sunday donation can make, click here.
Year End Tax Planning Tips
Year End Tax Planning tips! Did you know that if you are 70-1/2 you are required to take a minimum distribution from your IRA and pay taxes on some or all of that distribution? However, you can avoid that tax by having those funds distributed directly to a qualifying charity. Donations of stock have the added benefit of giving you a tax deduction based on what the stock is selling for on the date of the gift, not what you paid for it. Finally, any prepayment of 2022 pledges could have an impact on your Tax Year 2021 tax situation. If you know you will be able to itemize your deductions for Tax Year 2021 and may not for 2022, consider prepaying a portion of your pledge. If you have any questions about these donation methods, please reach out to our Business Manager, Matthew Smith at

Trunk or Treat for all Ages!                                                                October 24, 3-5pm
  Rain Date October 31, 3-5p

 Masks, strongly encouraged.

Trunk-or-Treat is just not for kids and families. At LUMC, it is so much more than kids dressing up and collecting candy. Trunk-or-Treat is an opportunity for the entire church family to gather in fellowship while inviting the community to join in on the fun. We never know how offering hospitality and Christian love to our neighbors might be the seed someone needs to begin a life of discipleship.
How can you help and be a part of this great event? We will need folks to decorate their trunks and hand out candy. As well as people willing to work hospitality and welcome stations. If you are unable to join the event, we will be collecting candy to use at the event. Finally, we ask for prayer that all those who attend, share and experience God’s love.
To signup to be a part of this fellowship event, register here or register at the kid’s registration area on Sunday.

In Person Children's Choir in Full Swing

Preschool Music Time:
New this fall for preschoolers, Ms. Becky will be doing music and movement time during preschool Sunday school classes. This active time will get preschoolers on their feet, singing and dancing to age appropriate church songs. There will be some opportunities to sing in worship for interested kids.

Dress For Success Donations by Linworth UMW
Thank you for all of your donations so far!
Dress For Success will continue this month thru October 19th. Collections can be dropped off during church hours (8:30 to 4:30) or in the container near the elevator.

Are you interested in joining our Celebration Ringers? We are in need of a bass ringer for the 2021-22 choir season. These bells are bigger and heavier, so arm strength (or a desire to build it!) is a plus. Basic music reading ability is required. No handbell experience necessary- we will teach you the technique!

Rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 6:15-7:15 beginning September 2nd.

We are in need of men’s new white athletic socks, new underwear sizes S, M, L and men’s smaller size jeans and pants and gently used hoodie sweatshirts of any size. We can also use personal hygiene products. Donations are being collected underneath the pantry cabinets next to the church office.

Discipleship Baby Steps

Recently, while talking to a colleague about a project I was working on and feeling overwhelmed, I was reminded of how a baby learns to walk. It begins months before those first steps as infants strengthen and develop their leg muscles. The infants have no understanding of walking but they delight in standing on an adults’ lap bouncing up and down. As they continue to develop, they begin to crawl and soon find the edges of furniture and begin to pull themselves up and stand wabbly, holding on with both hands. We all know this progresses and the many stages that have to be learned before a baby can confidently toddle around.
I find it interesting that we adults, forget that learning something new, even discipleship, which is following and living out Jesus’ teachings, takes the purposeful plodding, stretching and strengthening our faith. In this COVID-19 season we have had to put some of our favorite ways to serve on hold but discipleship; acts of compassion, justice, worship and devotion continue.
How are your discipleship muscles doing? If COVID didn’t exist, many of you would be stretching your discipleship muscles, preparing to welcome our neighbors in to shop and fellowship at the fall garage sale. Actually, about 1,000 hours of discipleship would be strengthened through this event. WOW!
Here is the challenge, we can recognize our sadness of missing out on another event. But we also can reinvest those hours into other discipleship opportunities. How, you ask? Connect in worship, in person or online. If you haven’t seen someone connect for a while, reach out to them. Prayer and reading, devote 15-20 minutes a day to intentionally being with God. Be open to new ways to serve such as participating at Trunk or Treat, joining the children’s Sunday school team, or greeting on Sunday mornings. Finally, join a small group. We are slowly bringing back in person gatherings and equipping our space for hybrid events. Please let Pastor Brooke or your clergy team know you are interested in joining in. However you choose to strengthen you discipleship muscles, remember, it is baby steps. Each and every baby step will help you grow in you live out your commitment to Jesus Christ in discipleship.
Blessings, Pastor Brooke

 Hilltop Community

Linworth’s support of our ministry work in the Hilltop area of Columbus helps us partner with diverse groups such as Burroughs Elementary School, Celebrate One’s initiative for the well health of newborns and under 1s, the Highlands Youth Garden, Ville on the Hill support for elderly people, fresh produce markets and free lending libraries, and various initiatives through the Shalom Zone.  We are looking forward to getting back in the neighborhood sometime soon and are always open to new ideas on how to serve.  If you are looking for a place to share your talents and your ministerial service, and would like to know more, please contact Laurie Sandall 614-329-1508 or Pastor Sara

 Habitat Build

Our 2021 build with AEP and Habitat for Humanity is underway.  It is located at 1560 Briarwood Avenue in Columbus. This is just four houses down from the project we did with Habitat and Hilliard Adopt-A-House in 2019.  Volunteer opportunities are available each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Linworth's own Jim Rosing is leading this project. If you have an interest in helping, please contact Jim at or 740-602-0241. Join us! We can hardly wait to make a huge difference in another family's lives!

Verse of the Week:

"In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."
