North Devon 'Ruby Red' Beef
I haven't really mentioned meat in any of these newsletters, but we do run a closed herd of native cattle on the farm which supplies the farm shop and restaurant with beef. It is important for us to have animals on the farm: our soil is so light and sandy that it needs the extra hummus and nutrients which cow dung provides. We also have parts of the farm that are not suitable for crops so growing grass for the cows is a use for these fields.
We have had cattle on the farm since John and Joyce bought it in 1971. Originally this was a dairy herd but we moved to beef when the cost of maintaining the parlour versus the price of milk made it unsustainable. Our first beef animals were bought from Tamarisk Farm along the coast. We keep our own bull and the calves stay with their mothers until they get too big and unruly!
Many customers have complimented us on the flavour of our beef and several people shop with us mainly for the good quality, traceable meat we offer. Now is a great time to make your own burgers or meatballs from our minced beef, an easy supper made from good, simple ingredients.
