North Devon 'Ruby Red' Beef

I haven't really mentioned meat in any of these newsletters, but we do run a closed herd of native cattle on the farm which supplies the farm shop and restaurant with beef. It is important for us to have animals on the farm: our soil is so light and sandy that it needs the extra hummus and nutrients which cow dung provides. We also have parts of the farm that are not suitable for crops so growing grass for the cows is a use for these fields.
We have had cattle on the farm since John and Joyce bought it in 1971. Originally this was a dairy herd but we moved to beef when the cost of maintaining the parlour versus the price of milk made it unsustainable. Our first beef animals were bought from Tamarisk Farm along the coast. We keep our own bull and the calves stay with their mothers until they get too big and unruly!
Many customers have complimented us on the flavour of our beef and several people shop with us mainly for the good quality, traceable meat we offer. Now is a great time to make your own burgers or meatballs from our minced beef, an easy supper made from good, simple ingredients.

Washingpool Farm Shop has evolved over the years. A shed on the farm (top right) and a shop in town (top left) in the early 1980's grew to two shops in town and two stalls on market days - all just fruit and veg.
After the supermarkets came, trade dropped off and in 2001 we decided to move the shop back to the farm (bottom photos). This building is still the core of the farm shop, and fruit and veg is still the core of our business.
In 2005 we added a restaurant and extra bays to the shop, doubling the floor space. We then expanded the shop into the store room and added a new building for the store. Our most recent change has been using the restaurant space for collating and storing customer orders, who knows what the future will hold for us?
This is a call out for recipes to add to future newsletters. It could be a family favourite, something special or a great way to use an ingredient that you buy from us. Please email using the button below.
