When you don't really feel that way...


People who are self confident generally embrace new things, stay in control when things go wrong and are decisive. Successful people are generally also self-confident. But what happens when you have a day where your confidence has taken a walk? And how do you build self-confidence?

One thing you need is to have self belief. Confidence comes from the belief that you are capable of handling whatever comes your way. It also comes from the belief that you have the skills to deliver. 
Albert Bandura is one of the leaders researchers in the area of self confidence and self efficacy. His theory states there are four ways to develop self confidence.

These are:
  • Mastery of experiences – things you have succeeded at in the past. If you have done something in the past, you are capable and able to do it again in the future. 
  • Vicarious experiences – seeing people who are similar to you succeed. Who else has done what you want to do? Knowing others of similar age, background, intellect etc who have done what you want to do can help you be more confident. "if they can do it, I can do it'.
  • Social persuasion – hearing from others that you're capable. This one can be tricky. If you are lacking in self-confidence, then you may not believe others when they tell you that you are capable. Learn to accept the acknowledgment of others. They see things in you that you overlook or minimise. 
  • Emotional state – stay positive, and manage stress. We all know that the times that we are most likely to lack confidence is when we are stressed, over tired or have had a series of events that appear to be negative. Reframing those events as just events will help. There is learning in everything. Stuff happens. What we think about what happens determines our attitude and our level of confidence is to some degree an attitude. 
So next time you feel like your confidence is lacking, see if you can use some of these techniques to talk yourself around.
