What are you gambling on? Often we take risks that we aren't prepared to own.
This week, we are discussing:

What are you gambling on?

Is the risk worth the prize?

Today in Australia is Melbourne Cup day. This is the horse race that stops the nation. Many people who wouldn't normally gamble put money on the race. And many of them don't care if they win or lose, it's all about getting into the spirit of it. It's part of our desire to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and to fit in. It did get me thinking though. When we gamble on a race we are putting our money on a horse to win for us. And if we lose, well we can say it was fun and didn't do any harm. What about in life. Do we gamble with things in life believing that they do no harm? Or that the result in the end is outside of our control, but hey, at least we were somehow involved in race.

I've been involved in the personal development field for over 20 years in one form or another. One of the things I've noticed is how many people believe they are in the race but don't take responsibility. The first lesson to living a great life is to completely own it. Your life is a result of the situations, choices and decisions you have been faced with. Unlike the horse race, the race of life is within your control. You determine whether you win or lose on any given day. And you decide whether you can live with your choices or you want to try and blame someone else for them.

You know what's happened in the last few years though, which I find interesting. There are a lot of people going around who say 'everything in my life has bought me to this point and I embrace it all'. They say that and don't live that. They continue to go to seminars, workshops, gurus looking for someone to give them the answer. The don't fully take responsibility for their world.  And what is rare is someone who, when they have messed up, genuinely says - 'I own that, I'm so sorry'.There is too much lip service and too little heart service.

There is a big difference between being at peace with your past and owning choices you have made. Everyday, you run your own Melbourne Cup, in your own life. You take a chance, you evaluate the risks, you don't have complete control over the outcome and you want to be part of something bigger. When it goes well and you win, you celebrate. When you don't win, you commiserate. In everyday life, the same applies, you don't have to be happy with everything that happens. You will be happier however if you are truly taking responsibility for it. Not lip service. But truly owning it all. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Have a great day and may you win big today.

Til next time

If you must play, decide upon three things at the start: the rules of the game, the stakes, and the quitting time.
