Life is a roller-coaster

Life is a roller-coaster. We've heard it before (I'm sure someone wrote a song with that lyric) and in the lead up to Christmas we can experience them all. Moments of Anger, Contempt, Fear, Disgust, Happiness, Sadness and Surprise.  These are the 7 basic emotions that psychologist claim all humans have. On top of that are all the feelings we can feel when we recognise or blend these emotions. Love, anxiety, despair etc. This week has felt like that ride. I've spend time in most of these.

People think because of the work that I do I must have a handle on all this stuff and only ever feel calm and peace. I wish that were true, or do I? I am really great by now at recognising my 'state of mind' and also at changing it if I need to. I think though sometimes we can be too hard on ourselves when it comes to our emotions. We can not only feel angry but be angry at ourselves for feeling that. I wonder what would happen if you just give yourself a break and accept that you feel angry (or whatever you are feeling). We can spend too much time trying to change ourselves rather than just acknowledging  whatever we are experiencing in the moment. We might not like that we feel angry, but the second we accept that is what we are feeling it loses some of it's impact.

I was watching a documentary yesterday and they were talking about food and emotions. The person in the documentary was saying sometimes we are so afraid of feeling - rage, anger, sadness, loneliness...etc - that we eat instead. You cannot eat and be angry. You cannot eat and be grief stricken. We sometimes use food to dull our emotions because we are afraid of them.  I would challenge you this week to just acknowledge and accept what you are feeling.  Only then do you have the power to change it if you wish to.

So, if you, like me, have been on a bit of a roller-coaster, be thankful that you have that much variety and depth within you and accept and acknowledge. There is real power that comes from owning who you are. That includes all your emotions. You are a multi-faceted person with a wide range of ways to be. Give it a go. Feel your emotions, accept them and move on from them. To the next moment, the next emotion, the next experience.

have a great week.

Til next time
