Two links I came across today, that test, and find wanting, two popular
website user interface choices.

I am not entirely sure about this one: small screens give you limited
choices, and it may be the best available. Ideally test, otherwise I
would say think about how you could place important elements outside the
bar.

Seems more clear cut: do not use social share buttons unless you either
have proof they actually work on your site, or you can display a high
share count to impress visitors.

Also always "use lightweight implementations with minimal ‘noise’ and
clutter". If you must use something like Add This, but never the buttons
supplied by the social networks themselves. All social share buttons I
have implemented anywhere do this - it is a bit more work but it is
faster loading and respects your customers' privacy.

As always, please forward this to anyone who may find it interesting.
