United Church of Christ leaders, angered and sickened by this week's discriminatory Supreme Court decision which will allow the Trump administration to begin enforcing a ban on transgender military service members, are speaking out and reaching out.
"To all members of the trans community —I am so very sorry for the trauma this inflicts," said the Rev. John C. Dorhauer, UCC general minister and president. "Please know that whenever religious voices tell you that you do not belong, cannot serve, and will not be tolerated — you will find a safe home and harbor in a United Church of Christ that still believes that no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here. We seek to live out of vision to build a just world for all — and to continually resist those who try to strip you of your rights, your dignity, and your pursuit of happiness."

2019 SAUGATUCK/DOUGLAS WOMEN'S MARCH
Despite the snow and cold temperatures, hundreds turned out for last Saturday’s Saugatuck/Douglas Women’s March. We had a standing-room-only crowd at the church for a pre-March service. Thank you to our church’s Social Justice Team for hosting and making signs; to Nancy Plantinga for leading us in word and song; to the Persisterhood Choir; and to all who took part.More photos on our church's Facebook page. And, read our own Elizabeth Estes's powerful speech in full at:www.ithinkwecanallagree.com.
The Congregational Care Committee is need of a new coordinator to replace Kathy Austin who must step down. This service offers assistance to congregational members and friends who may be in need of assistance (e.g. as providing meals) because of surgery, an illness, or other short-term challenge. Please contact Kathy Austin (firstname.lastname@example.org or 616 283-5724) if you would like more information about serving our church in this way.
Our Church Directory is being updated for 2019. Please visit the “Directory Kiosk” on the Friendship Hall table to review your information, make changes/additions, or to add yourself as a new listing. Thank you to Mike VerMerris for facilitating this for us.
We are seeking volunteers who are willing to shovel snow outside the church on Sunday mornings this winter. If you can help, please sign the sheet in the Friendship Hall. Thanks! (We have hired a young man to shovel from Monday thru Saturday).
Snow Closings - Should we ever need to cancel a Sunday service due to snow this winter, we will post an announcement on the scroll of WZZM, Channel 13. We will also post closings on our church's Facebook page: www.facebook.com/douglasucc
The next meeting of the True North Women's Group will be on Wednesday, February 6, at 10 a.m. at 88 Spring Street. Newcomers are always welcome.
