2017 ACI-ODO Workshops, New Jet Blue Kiocks, ODO at Passenger Terminal Expo, Updated POC Cards...and more!

Jan. 2016 News

Unfortunately or fortunately we the people of the United States of America must live under the leadership that has currently been chosen. Until there is a long process of removal, we are going to have to live under the current administration's ideals and power, but we at ODO will not tolerate discrimination. Working with 40+ foreign carriers from the Middle East to Africa, Asia, Europe and the South Pacific, I have learned that cultures and people may have differences but it is never so severe that we should ban them from our country. After all, most of our violence comes from within our own society and we should start there. Bad people do bad things no matter where they are from or what they believe in, but everyone deserves a chance. Most likely anyone coming into the US would have to buy weapons after they get here, which means there is almost always someone from the US helping the bad guys, because we have bad guys, too.

ODO to Present at PTE

The Passenger Terminal Expo regularly includes a conference track on Ageing Population & PRMs, chaired by Roberto Castiglioni. On March 16 Laurel Van Horn will kick off proceedings with a presentation on ACRP 07-13: Enhancing Wayfinding in Airports for Aging Travelers and Persons with Disabilities. The Airport Design, Planning and Development track will also feature a disability-related presentation by Phil Burke, MSP, and Eric Peterson, Alliiance, on "Delivering Equitable Access for Airport Use." ODO's Eric Lipp and Katy Rosseland will be at PTE as well to conduct research for our ACRP 01-31 project. We hope to see you there!
2017 ACI-ODO Workshops
Airports Council International and ODO plan to offer 2 to 3 "Accommodating Passengers with Disabilities (APD) Workshops" in 2017, with one already set for Houston on Nov. 6-8. We are now looking at airports in other regions for the spring and summer workshops. These 3-day, professional certification courses are designed for ADA/Section 504 Coordinators as well as other airport executives, managers and planners. The APD Workshops provide an introduction to US disability rights legislation, accessibility standards and adaptive IT as well as a Disability Awareness Module with findings from the 2015 ODO Market Study. Each course concludes with an airport tour that focuses on accessible design and technology and how travelers with disabilities function in these complex environments. Information/Registration.

Jet Blue Stowage Training

Reducing damage to wheelchairs and other mobility devices is a key goal for Open Doors Organization and its corporate partner Global Repair Group (GRG). On Jan. 24, Eric Lipp and Craig Kennedy held two workshops for Jet Blue ramp crew at JFK, attended by 30 ground handlers. This unique hands-on training provides an introduction to the different types of mobility devices and batteries and emphasizes the importance of communicating with passengers and using airline stowage tags. Kathy Kennedy, Sr. Operational Advocate ACAA Compliance, hosted the sessions and also conducted interviews with Eric and Craig that were filmed for use at Jet Blue University. If you would like to schedule an ODO-GRG Stowage Training at your airport or airline, email Katy Rosseland, ODO Program Coordinator.

ODO at Indiana University

On Jan. 26, Laurel Van Horn, ODO Director of Programs, traveled to Bloomington to give a guest lecture to a large, introductory class on "Inclusion in Recreation." It was exciting to meet so many young people now considering careers in tourism and already gaining awareness of the needs of travelers with disabilities. ODO began working with Indiana University (IU) in 2016 when Dr. Shu Cole, Associate Professor, Dept. of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies, joined our ACRP 01-31 team. This past summer we welcomed our first intern from IU, and we're also assisting Dr. Cole with a hospitality project. During the visit Laurel met as well with Dr. Sherril York, Executive Director, National Center on Accessibility, based at the IU School of Public Health. (Shown above: Dr. Jennifer Piatt's Inclusion in Recreation class).

POC Cards

Newly updated Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) cards are available from Advanced Aeromedical. Although the FAA no longer tests and approves the devices, Advanced Aeromedical continues to list new devices tested and labeled by manufacturers as safe for use in flight. The POC cards can be downloaded as a PDF or requested free of charge by emailing Advanced Aeromedical.

Nut Allergies In The News

Two major publications, Forbes and the NYTimes, recently reported on the DOT complaint filed against American Airlines (AA) by Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE). Unlike other major carriers who allow customers with severe nut allergies to preboard to wipe down tray tables and seats, AA has a written policy specifically denying them this right. As severe allergies are considered a disability under the Air Carrier Access Act, the DOT is now investigating.

New Jet Blue Kiosks

Not only are the new kiosks at Jet Blue's JFK Terminal 5 attractive and well-designed, 100% of them are accessible! Although the Air Carrier Access Act requires 25% of new kiosks to meet new accessibility standards by 2020, Jet Blue made the decision to replace all check-in kiosks with the new model that features a Trace EZ Access key pad and also prints bag tags. Now that's inclusion! (Shown above: Eric Lipp)
