Oct. 2013 News

This was a busy month for ODO and me personally as I hit the road to promote our aviation programs. I met with Southwest Airlines and spoke at the American Association of Airport Executives meeting in New Orleans. With both groups it is apparent that our Certified Access Provider training is needed and wanted at airports across the nation. This new program will help ensure that customers with disabilities and older travelers receive the same standard of service each and every time they fly and that employees understand how important and valuable their service really is. With this in mind, as fundraising season has started, consider donating to ensure this program, as well as our many others, can continue to grow and improve travel for those with disabilities.

ODO Partners With AIR

ODO is happy to announce a new partnership with Autism Inclusion Resources (AIR), the Philadelphia non-profit headed by Dr. Wendy Ross. Our goal: to help expand AIR's excellent travel and entertainment programs to reach more families across the US. The AIR Airport Program, which pairs a clinician with each family to create individualized coping strategies and also trains airport staff, is recognized as the gold standard among such initiatives. Autism spectrum disorder now affects 1 in 88 children in the US, 1 in 54 boys.

Marketing Outlook Forum 2013

ODO has once again been invited to contribute a paper for the Marketing Outlook Forum, held in Chicago this year on October 28-30. The event, organized by the Travel & Tourism Research Association, is the leading travel forecast conference. Special thanks to TTRA and Dr. Suzanne Cook for recognizing the importance of the disability travel market and for providing ODO this opportunity. ODO 2013  Forecast pdf msword

NY Times X 2!

ODO made the NY Times twice this month, contributing to articles by Tanya Mohn on accessibility in art museums and on aquatic wheelchairs in Trinidad and Tobago. Assisting journalists with their research is an important part of our mission. Who knows how many families will now venture out to a museum for the first time or how many other venues will undertake similar programs?

Demand Growing at Open Taxis

October was another banner month at Open Taxis, the accessible taxi dispatch service run by ODO. We expect rides this month to exceed 2,500, up from 2,378 in Sept. and 2,020 in August. In addition, average pickup time has dropped and call backs to compliment both drivers and dispatchers are on the rise. Good job, team!
