ODO Wins ACRP Contract, FAA To Join ACI/ODO Workshop, UAIA Update, Access Board Online Guide,  Z Life Beach Party...and more

June 2016 News

Happy Summer everyone! ODO is in the middle of a great year. We have now signed and begun work on our first Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) contract as the Prime Contractor to study innovation and best practices on accessibility in airports. This July we launch our new training program with Airports Council International (ACI). Having ACI as a partner shows that the industry is aware of the importance of accommodating travelers with disabilities. In cooperation with presenting sponsor United Airlines and Indiana University School of Public Health, we are also updating and expanding the Easy Access Chicago guide. And, of course, we’re busy preparing for our 6th Universal Access in Airports event this fall. If you'd like to sponsor or speak, give us a call.

ODO Wins ACRP Contract
It's official! Open Doors Organization will be the lead on the Airports Council Research Program (ACRP) Project 01-31: Innovative Solutions to Facilitate Accessibility for Airport Travelers with Disabilities. Assisting ODO on the 18-month project will be experts from Alliiance, an architectural firm based in Minneapolis; Arora Engineers; Indiana University; United Airlines and Trillion Aviation. The research, which kicked off this June, will include case studies of airports in the US, Canada and Europe; focus groups on travelers with disabilities; phone interviews with industry leaders; small-scale surveys and group discussions at ODO aviation events.

ODO Lift/Transfer Workshop

On May 31 Eric Lipp and Katy Rosseland conducted a hands-on lift and transfer workshop for United Airlines at their former headquarters in Chicago. Assisting were Craig Kennedy, Gus Zografopoulos, Jackie Kelley and Julia Besch from ODO; Phil Cain from Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago; and Michael Bliwas, Cassie Kirsch and David Calzada from Global Repair Group. The class, attended by 18 United trainers and 5 members of upper management, focused on regulatory requirements, communication with passengers and safe lift/transfer techniques. Attendees practiced transfers between wheelchairs, boarding chairs and the seats on the mock-up aircraft cabin, with and without transfer boards. ODO is also creating a lift and transfer video for use in United staff training.

UAIA Early Bird Ends 6/30
Don't miss out!  Early Bird Registration for Universal Access in Airports 2016 ends June 30. One important change this year: Accredited Airport Executives (AAEs) can now earn up to 9 CEUs for attending this very educational event. Sponsorship packages that include mulitple registrations and an ad in the UAIA Program are still available. Email Katy Rosseland for additional details or call 773.388.8839.

FAA To Join SFO Workshop
We're happy to announce that Jonathan Klein, Team Lead, FAA Airport Disability Compliance Program, and his Chicago-based colleague Elisha Luyeho will be guest speakers at the ODO/ACI workshop set for July 20-22 at San Francisco International Airport. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn directly from the FAA about the various disability regulations affecting airports and how their compliance program works. This introductory level, 3-day training, entitled Accommodating Passengers with Disabilities, is designed for aviation managers, planners and access coordinators. Details and registration.

ADA/ABA Guide

The US Access Board has released the latest installment of its Online Guide to the ADA Standards. The new content, which covers Chapter 5 of the standards, features an animation and technical bulletins on accessible parking and passenger loading zones.
