July 2012 News

As the 30th Olympiad is upon us, I am very proud to say that ODO played its part in making these games the best possible for fans and athletes with disabilities. Not only did we provide ramp training to prevent damage to mobility devices, but our partner Global Repair Group will have staff onsite at Heathrow during the Paralympics. Can you even imagine, a popped tire tube fixed on the spot at the airport or someone whose wheelchair or scooter is damaged being able to leave the airport in a loaner available onsite? Now that’s what I call revolutionary!!  I'm thrilled those in the UK understand the real value of an assistive device…priceless!!!!  Enjoy the Games!

Eric Lipp, Executive Director, Open Doors Organization

Global Repair Group in London

During the Paralympics, technicians from Global Repair Group will be available inside security at Heathrow to assess damage to mobility devices, make easy repairs and, if necessary, provide a loaner. This unique service, the first ever in an airport, is available 6am-10pm from Aug. 21-28 and Sept. 10.
If you're heading to London before then, never fear. Global Repair Group already provides a 24/7 repair service in the London area and welcomes calls from both individuals and airlines. Call GRG toll-free at 442030514036.

57 Million Strong!

On July 26, to mark the 22nd anniversary of the ADA, the US Census Bureau released a new report, Americans with Disabilities: 2010.  The number of Americans living with a disability has grown to 57 million, 19% of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. Among people 15 and older, 8 million had a hearing disability, 8 million a vision disability and 31 million difficulty walking or climbing stairs. Four million use a wheelchair and 12 million a cane, crutch or walker.

Hearing Loops on Buses

Induction loops are finally catching on in the US.  Kalamazoo and South Bend airports recently installed loops. Even more surprising, a Michigan intercity bus company, Indian Trails, looped its entire fleet thanks to a grant from the MI Dept. of Transportation.
