April 2016 News

I took a family vacation recently for spring break, and for the first time my kids really began to understand that having a physical disability prompts fear in other people. This was the first they really noticed how often people asked me, "What happened?" We began to count how many asked. The average was 4 per day, but they wondered how could the people actually get through asking when they sounded so apprehensive. They also noticed that some people really did care because their tone and expression showed it.  But the one thing that had the greatest impact was that people were seeing me for my disability. They noticed the stares around the pool when I took my brace off and walked around, but the good news is the kids still didn't care: they wanted my brace off and me in the pool.
