First IATA Global Accessibility Symposium in Dubai, IATA GAPS Conference to Feature ODO, ADI/ODO Workshop at CVG, Exciting News from TSA...and More!

Sept. 2019 News

As we continue to move forward with this year's aviation initiatives, we are proud to announce our Strategic Partnership with IATA, the international association for airlines. In November the first Global Accessibility Symposium will take place in Dubai where IATA and Emirates will bring together the world's carriers and with ODO's support will begin to map out the road to access and inclusion worldwide. I am just back from two amazing trainings: one I attended in Disney and the other I delivered at SFO. Both reminded me of how many lives we all impact everyday. Travel and tourism is one of life's most precious treasures, and when we touch you, you touch others and we impact a lot! Let's stay ahead on access and continue to be leaders, not followers.

IATA Global Accessibility Symposium

This first-of-its-kind event from International Air Transport Association, with ODO as the Supporting Organization, will take place on November 5-6, 2019 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Hosted by Emirates, it will offer an unparalleled platform to debate with stakeholders and passengers how air transport can be the leader of a truly accessible and inclusive industry for travelers with disabilities. The Symposium will provide a unique opportunity to look at some of the regulatory/policy approaches worldwide, to identify operational best practices and to explore innovative technologies that will enable persons with disabilities to have access to a safe, reliable and dignified travel experience. Come join us in Dubai as we help to make the IATA Resolution on Passengers with Disabilities a reality!  RegistrationPreliminary Agenda.

IATA GAPS Conference
Open Doors Organization will also contribute to the IATA Global Airport and Passenger (GAPS) Symposium to be held in Warsaw, Poland, on Oct. 15-17. Laurel Van Horn, VP Director of Programs, will speak on a panel entitled, "Building a Seamless Passenger Journey for Passengers with Reduced Mobility and Disabilities."  Moderated by Roberto Castiglioni, Dir., Reduced Mobility Rights Ltd., the panel will also include David Brennan, Asst. Dir. Cargo Safety & Standards, IATA; Rosalie Crabbe, Mgr. Accessible Programs and Regulatory Compliance, United Airlines; James Freemantle, Consumer Enforcement Mgr., UK CAA; and Lorne Mackensie, Director, Westjet. GAPS, now in its second year, focuses on the processes that touch the passenger journey, on the ground and in the air, and impact airport processes and operations.  Registration.  Program.
ACI/ODO Workshop at CVG
On October 22-24, Laurel Van Horn and Craig Kennedy will conduct the next ACI/ODO "Accommodating Persons with Disabilities" Workshop at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Under the leadership of Candace McGraw, CEO, and Brian Cobb, former VP Customer Experience, now Chief Innovation Officer, CVG has become one of the most accessible airports in the U.S. Come and learn how you, too, can help enhance your airport's facilities and services. A highlight of the workshop is sure to be the guided tour of CVG and its numerous innovations. For details and registration, visit ACI Global Training.

TSA News

On Sept. 23, the TSA hosted its 17th Annual Disability & Multicultural Coalition Conference to update both communities on advances in training, services, and technologies. Over 5,500 Passenger Service Specialists have been trained and will soon have an identifying badge. PSS training will also be a regular part of career advancement for TSA Officers. Speakers also discussed TSA technologies being tested at the new Innovation Checkpoint at Las Vegas including the enhanced AIT (shown above) that is open and no longer requires arms to be raised overhead. Because it is wheelchair accessible, it also eliminates the need for an ADA-complaint gate.
