Dec. 2015 News

As 2015 draws to a close we want to thank all of our supporters who have helped to make this such a dynamic and productive year. In addition to participating in two major federal projects on accessible transportation, ODO released its third nationwide study on American travelers with disabilities. Meanwhile we kept up a busy training schedule, volunteered on numerous committees and helped raise awareness through speaking engagements and the media. And don't forget the huge difference we make every day in Chicago through Open Taxis, our centralized dispatch service. 2016 looks to be even more exciting with many new projects in the works. If you'd like to support the great things we do, there's still time this year to make a tax-deductible contribution via our website, by mail or by calling us at 773-388-8839.
Happy New Year!

The first introductory-level workshop, Passengers with Reduced Mobility, is scheduled for May 16-18, 2016, in San Francisco. A second intermediate-level course, focusing on the roles and responsibilities of airport access coordinators, will launch in the third quarter of 2016. Additional workshops are planned for 2017.  Press release

International Day of Persons with Disabilities - NYC
The United Nations in 1992 declared December 3rd the International Day of Persons with Disabilities to foster political, social, economic and cultural inclusion worldwide. Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities was this year's theme with a strong emphasis on the arts including dance, music, painting and the annual UN Enable Film Festival. Throughout the day there were panels on disability data and statistics, hidden disabilities and urban access. Inclusive tourism and global accessibility standards were also hot topics. Part 382 Rulemaking

Rather than issuing a final rule as anticipated this December, the US DOT instead announced in the Federal Register that it is exploring use of a regulatory negotiating committee (Reg Neg). The issues to be addressed by the Reg Neg include inflight entertainment, supplemental medical oxygen, service animals, accessible lavatories on single-aisle aircraft, seating accommodations, and carrier reporting of disability service requests. The period for public comment closes Wed., Jan. 6th.

Web Access Rule Delayed

According to the DOJ's latest Statement of Regulatory Priorities, the
Title III regulation on accessibility of business websites will not be ready until 2018. The Title II rule requiring state and local government sites to comply will, however, be issued in 2016 as will a final rule on captioning and audio description in movie theatres.
