Letters to the Editor
You will no doubt have seen that the government has introduced a Charities Amendment Bill into Parliament, with submissions closing on 9 December: . In my view, the Bill is a kick in the guts to charities - in case it might be of interest, some of the concerns are talked about here and here

Further to [Earlier] correspondence regarding the Charities Amendment Bill, I thought you might be interested in a petition Tim Howard has created asking the Government to press pause on the Bill – please see the following link in case it might be of interest: https://our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/press-pause-on-the-charities-act-changes

  • If you are a Registered NZ Charity with an EoFY (end of financial year) of 30 June, you will need to get your Annual Return to DIA Charities Services by 31 December. See this blog from DIA Charities Services.(includes links to a blog which busts the myth that you need an accountant to prepare your Performance Return.)
  • Remuneration. We recently received a question regarding CEO remuneration rates for non-profits in NZ. We referred it to NFP legal expert Steven Moe who responded: "I get this question a lot - there is no objective standard or list that I know of.  Each situation depends on context eg one charity may have a $30m budget while another has a $200k budget…"  A 2022 Australian Report on remuneration in the non-profit sector is available from a cost of $A319 for the full report (reduced cost for targetted portions of the report) although it will not directly translate to the NZ situation. <details>
  • NFP Resource newsletter will be taking a break. The next newsletter will published in February but the NFP Resource team will be keeping an eye on any general charities news over the holiday period.  To receive an email when a new post is made on the website please click here.

One-on-one clinics with Charities Services every Thursday

DIA Charities Services are holding one-on-one clinics every Thursday.

You are invited to talk to the DIA Charities Services team and get answers to the questions you have about being a registered charity. A range of appointments are available depending on what questions you need answered. Appointments are available with Charities Services staff to discuss advice on your rules, advice on changing your purposes or activities, financial reporting, and governance.

There are appointments available every Thursday. Register for one appointment, or multiple, depending on the help you need.

Once you have booked an appointment, Charities Services will be in contact to organise a Zoom or phone call appointment for the time and date that you have booked. To find out more and to sign up for a clinic, click here.
