It’s time to wake up! SMSC Lugano is approaching!
Only two months to go until the very first SMSC in Ticino. We’re already looking forward to a weekend full of interesting workshops and presentations with you.
As already mentioned, “consciousness” is a broad topic, and everybody understands it in a different way. We hope to address your understanding of consciousness during this weekend. Here’s a little sneak peek on our program:
“Climate consciousness” is a very present topic in our minds and affects us also as medical students. Professor Pietro Majno-Hurst will talk about climate, its connection to medicine and our role as future doctors in advocating for change.
But we also want to address topics such pharmacology and the interplay it has with our mind. Dr. med. Andrea Saporito will give you an insight in different ways on how to modulate consciousness with drugs.

Training Disaster Medicine Trainers
Are you interested in playing an active role in emergencies and disasters? Do you want to learn how to deliver healthcare when the needs exceed the resources?
· The Training Disaster Medicine Trainers (TdmT) is an international program developed by the IFMSA together with CRIMEDIM, the Center for Research and Training in Disaster Medicine, Humanitarian Aid, and Global Health at the University of Piemonte Orientale in Novara, Italy.
· It aims to provide medical students with theoretical knowledge and basic skills in the field of Disaster Medicine, empowering them to share the knowledge gained with their peers and in their communities.
· The course will consist of a three months online self-paced phase and a live participation period, held virtually in July.
You can apply through the following application form. The deadline is the 18th of February 2022, 23:59 GMT.
So many events, workshops, conferences and trainings are happening all of the time, all over the world, for medical students. How to keep track of them? You can join our new mailing lists! Just visit swimsa.ch/engagement, scroll down, and fill out the form, checking the boxes which correspond to your interests, and you will receive emails concerning events and opportunities. Still not sure what all of this means? Write an email to vpg@swimsa.ch and ask all your questions.
Is swimsa just this distant organisation to you? Have you ever read a statement from swimsa and felt you and other medical students should have been consulted? If this applies to you, this is the perfect opportunity for you.
We would like to invite everybody who has the motivation and time to join our brainstorming/design thinking session. The purpose of this in-person meeting would be to identify the problems that create this gap between swimsa and medical students.
The meeting will take place on the 20th of March from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. in Bern. It will take place in person under certain COVID-19 safety measures according to the situation at that time.
On the 13th of February, the people of Switzerland will vote on several initiatives, including the initiative on protecting children against tobacco advertisement and the initiative on animal and human testing.
swimsa recommends all medical students vote against the initiative on animal and human testing, as the consequences would be immense on our future as medical students and doctors. We have spoken out on the topic, in our statement, which you can find on our website as well as during a press conference organised by swissuniversities.
Over half of smokers report starting their smoking career before their 18th birthday. Tobacco advertisement has been proven to have a direct effect on the early start of tobacco consume. As future doctors aware of the vast consequences smoking has on the health of our future patients, the medical students are strongly in favour of the initiative on protecting children against tobacco advertisment. VSS: Umfrage zur Wohnsituation
Für Studierende wird es in gewissen Städten der Schweiz immer schwieriger eine bezahlbare Wohnung oder ein WG-Zimmer zu finden. Die Sozialkommission (SoKo) des VSS macht sich Sorgen um die Wohnsituation der Studierenden und hat daher eine Umfrage erarbeitet, die den Umfang der Problematik erfassen soll. Das Ausfüllen der Umfrage benötigt ca. fünf bis zehn Minuten.

UNES: Enquête sur la situation logement
Dans certaines villes de Suisse, il devient de plus en plus difficile pour les étudiant·e·s de trouver un appartement ou une chambre en colocation à prix abordable. La Commission sociale (CoSo) de l’UNES s’inquiète de cette situation et a donc créé un sondage afin de mieux cerner le problème. Le sondage prend environ 5 à 10 minutes.

NEO-NORE Weekend in Krakow, Poland
From the 4th to the 6th of February, a large part of the National Exchanges Team of swimsa participated in the annual NEO-NORE Weekend, hosted by IFMSA Poland in Krakow. It was the first European event since before the pandemic, marking it the first time most of the European Exchange Officers met in person.
During the sessions, we discussed how to increase the academic quality of our exchange programme, prepared for the upcoming March Meeting 2022 in North Macedonia, shared best practices with each other, talked about mental health issues and what makes us better officers.
For the NFDP (National Food and Drinks Party), we also brought along foods and drinks from our respective countries for the others to try - of course we brought raclette, Rivella and lots of chocolate!
We said our goodbyes being exhausted, sleep deprived, full of happy memories and thankful for having been part of such a great project, enabling students worldwide to go on clinical and research exchanges once again.

Ein noch junger Mann leugnet die schwere Krankheit, welche bei ihm diagnostiziert wird. Seine Mutter, die ihn zu schützen sucht, kann das Unausweichliche nicht ertragen. Zwischen ihnen sind ein Arzt und eine Krankenschwester, die darum kämpfen, ihre Arbeit zu tun und sie zur Akzeptanz zu bringen. Sie haben ein Jahr und vier Jahreszeiten, um zusammenzufinden und zu verstehen, was es bedeutet, lebend zu sterben.

The Swiss Medical Students’ Association is the umbrella organisation for all Swiss med students. Her members are all the 7 Fachschaften/associations and projects like Achtung Liebe, marrow, METIS, Teddybärspital etc. Twice per year, she organises the SMSC (= Swiss Medical Students’ Conference) with students from all parts of Switzerland.
