As the saying goes, “A rising tide raises all ships.”  Oceanside seems to be witnessing this phenomenon across the board.   Each new quarter brings more changes along with new success stories that we can continue to build on.  The entrepreneur spirit is not only alive but thriving in our quintessential beach community.

Riding the wave, the tourism industry is leveraging this exciting time.  During our Second Quarter for FY 2016-2017 (October-December), we saw positive growth in our lodging numbers despite the shoulder season.  Hotel revenues were up an average of 5.2% with November being the strongest month.  Some of the key events driving demand included Bike the Coast- Taste the Coast, pickleball, soccer tournaments, and the O'side Turkey Trot. 

It is important to note that reports from Smith Travel Research indicate that the new supply coming in to North County is having a negative impact on the forecast for our lodging industry. It’s going to be important that we work together with our City to ensure economic development is a priority; not only to remain healthy but to realize our full potential in maximizing revenues. Our industry is going to have to be diligent in creating new demand opportunities and product experiences for our destination.

According to research on visitor spending in Oceanside, lodging accounts for 28% of total visitor spending.  This means that there are millions of dollars that are being spent on dining, attractions and retail throughout visitor stays in Oceanside.

Our business development team continues to focus on client retention and managed existing group business that represented over 525 room nights throughout the quarter.  The team continues to prospect for new business and attended the Reunion Friendly Network Conference in Long Beach.  The department saw a 42% increase in inquiries for the quarter.   

The marketing department was busy overseeing the development of Oceanside’s new brand campaign that will be implemented in March 2017.  New assets are being developed and will be weaved into our social media platforms, web/internet ads, print ads and public relations.  Our public relations efforts are continuing to tell the Oside story with media trips to Los Angeles and Chicago along with hosting 3 travel writers and coordinating 13 stories to be published.  For the quarter, social media engagement and our website continued to be a priority with visitor inquiries up and over 73,000 unique users went to our site.
