FC+ FUNDING CALLS

1. FinCEAL+ Project Preparatory Funding Call closes on 15th April - Last chance to apply!
FinCEAL Plus offers Project Preparatory Funding to support applicants based in Finnish institutions who are in the process of preparing an application for collaborative research funding from European research funding schemes with partners from Africa, Asia or the LAC region. Deadline for applications is 15th April. More information on how to apply and examples of relevant calls

2. FinCEAL+ Targeted Travel Grants for Adaptation Futures 2016 Conference
FinCEAL Plus is inviting researchers to apply for Targeted Travel Grants to attend the 4th International Climate Change Adaptation Conference: Adaptation Futures 2016, in Rotterdam on May 10-13. The conference invites scholars, practitioners, policymakers and business people from all around the world to connect, learn and inspire.
The Call is directed to experts working in Finnish research institutions and focusing on any of the three FinCEAL Plus regions (Africa, Asia and/or the LAC region). The maximum individual grant is 900€ and can be used to cover travel, accommodation, daily allowances and/or registration fees. Deadline for applications is 30th March. 3. FinCEAL+ Call for Open Travel Grants is open as a Rolling call - Apply anytime!
The call is open to researchers and PhD students based in Finnish research institutions, who are working within the FinCEAL Plus themes, to facilitate their participation in: a) Consortia or networking meetings with European and African/Asian/LAC partners; b) Regionally significant Science, Technology, and Innovation events; c) Networking meetings, events or conferences within the project thematic areas. 4. Call for Experts to Attend the 3rd ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Days 2016, in Hanoi, Vietnam, 10-12 May 2016
The ASEAN-EU STI  Days bring together researchers, scientists, science policy makers, innovative companies, and other stakeholders from ASEAN and EU countries for a yearly three-day conference on science, technology, and innovation issues and bi-regional co-operation in these fields. The STI Days are open to all actors and stakeholders in the fields of research, development and innovation, thus giving them the opportunity to build their network, discuss, and engage in exchanging on topics of common interest and explore perspectives for new cooperation. FinCEAL Plus Asia is now gathering a delegation of experts from different Finnish universities, universities of applied sciences and research centres to participate the event. Deadline for applications is 30th March.  More information on how to apply

5. Other Funding Opportunities


Trans-Atlantic Platform for the Social Sciences and Humanities – Digging into Data Challenge
The Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) has launched the 2016 T-AP Digging into Data Challenge Call to support research projects that use "big data” to address questions in the social sciences and humanities. Each application must include partners from at least three participating countries (at least one partner from an EU country and at least one partner from North or Latin America). The deadline for the Call is 29th June, 2016. FinCEAL Plus Preparatory Funding can be applied for applications that have have partners from both Europe and Latin America. More information

BEAM-programme research funding call
Tekes and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' BEAM - programme has launched a call for research proposals for innovations meeting the needs of developing countries and providing Finnish companies with new business opportunities in the growing markets of such countries. The innovations in question can involve technology, service, business or social innovations, for example. Call closes 31.3.2016. More information

Information on First Call Launch by China for the EU-China Research and Innovation Co-Funding Mechanism
The EU-China Co-Funding Mechanism supports mainland China-based research and innovation organisations participating in Horizon 2020 projects. This first call covers a variety of thematic areas including food, agriculture, biotechnology, ICT, space, aviation, energy, health, transportation, water resources, energy conservation, advanced manufacturing, new materials, sustainable urbanization, and exchange of young scientists. Two deadlines are foreseen for 2016: 31 March and 31 July 2016. More information

Magnet financing scheme for foreign scientists to work in a Peruvian research institution
MAGNET is a financing scheme that the National Council for Science, Technology and Technological Innovation (CONCYTEC) of Peru has created to encourage the incorporation of highly specialized scientists, foreign or Peruvian, to consolidate research lines in science, technology and technological innovation in Peruvian entities. More information

Pre-announcement:Indo-European Science and Technology Joint Inno Indigo ERA-NET Call for proposals on Biobased Energy
Within the framework of the INDIGO Partnership Programme an EU-India S&T joint call for proposals on Biobased Energy is planned to be launched in April 2016. The topics covered by the call are Biofuels and From Waste to Energy. For more information see the Academy of Finland website (currently only in Finnish) and Inno Indigo S&T call 2016 website.

1st Finland-Namibia Cooperation Workshop, 12 April, Rauma
Finland and Namibia has had and have a lot of activities within education, research and business. The  1st Finland - Namibia co-operation workshop  will  be  held on Tuesday 12.4.2016 10-15 at Satakunta University of Science and Technology, Suojantie 2, Rauma. 1st Finland-Namibia co-operation workshop. Participate online. InnoFrugal Conference, 25-26 April, Vantaa
The conference is organized by the Nordic Frugal Innovation Society, and addresses issues such as Circular Economy, Shared Economy, Open Innovation, Inclusive/Social Innovation, DIY/Maker Movement and Co-creation. More information and registration

EURAXESS Links Conference "Linking Researchers Worldwide", 11 May, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The major scientific event of the European Week 2016 scheduled all over Brazil is aimed at providing an opportunity for European and Brazilian researchers to network and to learn from each other. ASEAN-EU STI Days, 3rd Edition, 10-12 May, Hanoi, Vietnam
The ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days are a forum style event, initiated by the European Comission's 7th Framework Programme funded by the SEA-EU-NET II project. This year's edition of the event will foucs on presenting academic/industry collaborations in and between ASEAN and the EU in the context of common key societal challenges for both regions. 7. European and Latin American Technology-based Business Network (ELAN) Public Consultation, upcoming events and open position for thesis worker


1) Participate in ELAN's public consultation to impact  developing technology based business opportunities between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean. The public consultation collects information for the assessment of the needs of European Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) to enter into business collaboration based on technology with partners in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) in all the following sectors: Renewable Energies, Biotechnology and the Bioeconomy, Environmental Technologies, Health, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Nanotechnologies, New materials.

2) Also check out the ELAN Network events calendar 2016! Including seven events organized in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico and Peru focused on generating technology based business opportunities (TBBO) between EU and LAC companies (in particular SMEs), and four Technology Missions from Latin America, Caribe and Europe to Argentina, Belgium, Finland and Netherlands with the aim of generating technology based business opportunities and sustainable partnerships between European and Latin American R&I actors.

3) Thesis worker position on innovation and international collaboration with Latin America at VTT in Espoo
VTT is hiring a thesis worker for a period of 6 months, starting in April 1st, to work at the Innovations, Economy and Policy research team, under supervision of Senior Scientist Maria Lima Toivanen. Tasks to be performed are related to ELAN project , specially analyzing EU and Latin American capabilities and hindrances for joint development of technology-based business opportunities. The tasks involve analysis of documents (reports, evaluations, interviews, etc.), compilation of information and support to writing of academic and policy reports. As an opportunity for developing your thesis your work will involve participating in the building of a SWOT for EU-LAC collaboration in specific research and innovation fields in Latin American countries and Europe. Requirements:
  • Background in business management or international business and knowledge on innovation ecosystems analysis and research and development and innovation programs.
  • Fluency in English and good reading level of Spanish

9. News from FinCEAL+ Grantees


FinCEAL Plus supported FFRC experts to attend the 2nd ASEAN-EU STI Days in France, an ASEM seminar in China and to organize a seminar in Myanmar to discuss and plan future cooperation.
Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC), a department at the Turku School of Economics (TSE), University of Turku is a multidisciplinary academic research, training, and development organisation. They have been building up research collaborations in Southeast Asia and China and they were supported by the FinCEAL Plus grants. Read more
