Developing Finnish Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation between Europe, Africa, Asia and the LAC region


1. FinCEAL+ Call for Open Travel Grants now open as a Rolling call - Apply anytime!
The call is open to researchers and PhD students based in Finnish research institutions, who are working within the FinCEAL Plus themes, to facilitate their participation in: a) Consortia or networking meetings with European and African/Asian/LAC partners; b) Regionally significant Science, Technology, and Innovation events; c) Networking meetings, events or conferences within the project thematic areas. 2. ERA-NET LAC Call is Open
The aim of the ERANet-LAC Joint Calls is to start new, sustainable and multilateral research cooperation between researchers from Europe, Latin-America and the Caribbean countries. The Academy of Finland will fund the following topics: Topic 1: Ecosystem-based adaptation and resilience; Topic 3: Biorefinery – Fractionation and valorization of residual biomass to intermediate and/or final high added value bioproducts; Topic 5: Wind Energy – Advancement of small/medium-scale wind turbines in EULAC countries; Topic 6: Solar thermal energy – Energy storage technologies
Deadline for applications: 10 March 2016. More information on the Academy of Finland website and the Call on the ERA-Net LAC website

3. Preparing a proposal for Horizon2020 with partners from Africa, Asia or the LAC region? 
FinCEAL Plus offers Project Preparatory Funding on a rolling call basis to support applicants based in Finnish institutions who are in the process of preparing an application for collaborative research funding from European research funding schemes. More information on how to apply See also the Horizon2020 links and our online Horizon2020 training available on our website.


4. UniPID Fall Seminar: Knowledge exchange for better policy and practice: A research – policy matchmaking event, 10-11th December 2015, Tieteiden talo, Helsinki
UniPID's Fall Seminar 2015 is dedicated to exploring challenges and opportunities of research – policy collaboration. The seminar will address the prerequisites and best practices of constructive knowledge-exchange between researchers and policymakers. We will look at different tools for effective multi-stakeholder co-operation, which facilitates evidence-based policy-making. Day 1, 10th December: Engaged scholarship workshop for researchers, day 2, 11th December: Research-policy matchmaking event. The seminar is supported by FinCEAL+. More information


5. FinCEAL+ Asia Side Event in Shanghai, China

China - Finland Bi-regional seminar on STI cooperation in Cleantech and Environment was held on November 4th in Shanghai, China as part of the Nordic Design and Innovation Week 2015 (NDIW2015) Finland day. The high level event was organized by UniPID-FinCEAL Plus in cooperation with China - Finland Strategic ICT Alliance.

The one day seminar gathered together over 50 experts on Cleantech, and Environmental Monitoring and Health, Urban Design and related areas from industry and academia as well as government representatives and other stakeholders from China and Finland and EU to present and discuss about key technologies in cleantech, environment monitoring and health aspects. The goal of the seminar was to provide opportunities for researchers and business and public sector representatives to get into detailed discussions on further cooperation. Read more

6. FinCEAL+ and CLIC Innovation Seminar on Renewable Energy Research with Third Countries

CLIC Innovation (Finnish Bioeconomy and Cleantech Cluster) and FinCEAL Plus organized a joint one day seminar on November 19th in Helsinki on international cooperation in Renewable Energy research, focusing especially on research collaboration with Third Countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean region. The seminar gathered together over 50 participants, mostly researchers from different universities and research institution, as well as representatives of funding institutions, ministries and foreign embassies, private sector and NGO representatives to share information on current initiatives, discuss the challenges and best practices related to cooperation with Third Countries, as well as provide information in funding opportunities within the Horizon2020 framework. 7. FinCEAL+ Event Grant Call Results

The FinCEAL+ Event Grants have been awarded. In this Call we received 18 applications and awarded 11 Grants to 7 different Finnish institutions. See the list of grantees

8. News from FinCEAL+ Grantees

Häme University of Applied Sciences to start cooperation with the Forum of Agricultural Research in Africa

Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) is the leading African actor in promoting agricultural research and innovation and HAMK is the first Finnish institution to sign a memorandum of understanding with FARA. The visit to Finland that was organized in September was a crucial step in building the cooperation between HAMK and FARA. FinCEAL Plus supported the organization of one of the seminars during the delegation visit. Following the delegation visit to Finland, Dr. Eija Laitinen (HAMK) also attended the 1st African Agri-Business Incubation Conference and Expo in Nairobi with a FinCEAL Plus travel grant to continue with the process of building the collaboration. Read more

VTT organized a workshop to build up cooperation in eHealth with the State of Amazonas in Brazil
VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, University of Oulu and the University of the State of Amazonas, Brazil, have been working since the end of 2013 to build up a collaboration initiative on research, innovation and business in eHealth for remote areas. To mark the launch of the initiative to Finnish stakeholders a workshop called “Amazon eHealth Framework – Developing cooperation with LAC to improve health care in remote areas”, which was supported by a FinCEAL event grant, was held in Espoo on November 30th 2015. The workshop convened important stakeholders from government, industry and academy, both from Finland and Brazil. Read more

InnoFrugal Conference 25-26 April 2016

The conference is organized by the Nordic Frugal Innovation Society, and addresses issues such as Circular Economy, Shared Economy, Open Innovation, Inclusive/Social Innovation, DIY/Maker Movement and Co-creation. Early-bird registration is open until 14th December 2015. More information and registration

New Publication from the EC:
The role of Science, technology and innovation policies to foster the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 

The report presents the conclusions of the independent Expert Group on the "Follow up to Rio +20, notably the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" that was established by the European Commission to provide advice on the role of STI for implementing the new global sustainable development agenda. The Group give recommendations, both in term of general policy orientation and concrete areas of engagement for EU STI policy to contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Europe and beyond, as well as for possible engagement in international initiatives concerning STI. It recommends the EU to capitalize on its Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme which is seeking to invest more than 60 % of its budget for sustainable development and is fully open to international participation.
