Call for Papers: Cooperation Across Borders - Comprehensive Responses To Transecting Global Challenges? 

The two-day seminar (scheduled for November 12-13th) aims to consider how international and intersectoral partnerships, interdisciplinary approaches and cross-cutting themes have been and should be taken into account and implemented in the Finnish response to global challenges. Read more 

FinCEAL Targeted Travel Grants for Successful R&I in Europe 2014 - 6th European Networking Event
 
FinCEAL has opened a Targeted Travel Funding Call to support the participation of a maximum of 6 experts from Finnish universities or research institutions, who are interested to attend the Successful R&I Horizon 2020 networking event in Dusseldorf, Germany, 30th - 31st, October, 2014. Read more

INVITATION: Networking Seminar: Co-creating cooperation opportunities between Higher Education Institutions in Eritrea and Finland

CIMO, together with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland (MFA) is organizing a high-level dialogue and workshop  with H. E. Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea to foster new joint ventures between Finnish and Eritrean higher education institutions. The seminar is targeting researchers, research administrators, and academic leaders with a keen interest in development cooperation and academic capacity building.
 
The purpose of the event is to:
  • Discuss the current needs in Eritrean higher education sector
  • Provide information on cooperation and funding possibilities
  • Provide practical knowledge on how to form projects and identify possible cooperation topics
The seminar feeds into an initiative by the MFA for funding targeted Eritrea specific capacity building projects between higher education institutions in Eritrea and Finland within existing Finnish funding instruments.

Save the Date for the Bioenergy in the South seminar (in Viikki, Helsinki, October 13th)


Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (VITRI), University of Helsinki, in cooperation with FinCEAL are arranging a seminar on Bioenergy to be held on Monday, October 13th at the Viikki campus of University of Helsinki. The 1-day seminar aims to provide up-to-date information on bioenergy in the tropics with special relation to bioenergy impacts on livelihoods and environment as well as bioenergy potential and opportunities for green economy and energy security. FinCEAL LAC Side-Event: High level Smart Cities Seminar in Santiago de Chile, September 10th


UniPID – Finnish University Partnership for International Development in cooperation with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Center of Innovation in Lithium/University of Chile, CONICYT/Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research and ÁgoraLab/Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil are organizing a bi-regional seminar focusing on Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation in Smart Cities, especially smart transport and energy solutions for urban areas. The seminar will be opened by Minister of Economic Affairs Mr. Jan Vapaavuori. FinCEAL is supporting the participation of 10 Finnish experts from Universities, research institutions and private sector in the seminar. More information. 

Satakunta University of Applied Sciences Visit to Namibia for Horizon 2020


Satakunta UAS was one of the institutions that received FinCEAL funding to prepare a Horizon 2020 Call. They recently visited Namibia as part of their preparatory work. EU-Brazil Technology and Innovation Forum & Tour of Brazil, September 22-25th, 2014.

The EU-Brazil Technology and Innovation Forum is organized by the B.BICE+ consortium at the occasion of the XXIV ANPROTEC Seminar on Science Parks and Business Incubation, held this year in Belém (Brazil). The ANPROTEC’s annual seminar constitutes an important tool for the consolidation of the movement of innovative entrepreneurship in Brazil; it contributes to strengthening business incubators and science & technology parks, as well as public policies related to Science, Technology and Innovation. About 600 participants are expected to participate in the 2014 seminar. Read more

ALCUE NET meeting on Biodiversity and Climate Change in Marseille, November 26-28th, 2014.

The ALCUE NET meeting on biodiversity and climate change - Towards bi-regional activities on observatories, network and joint programming - will be held on 26-28 November in Marseille, France. The event is organized by the Research Institute for Development (IRD, France), Foundation for Biodiversity Research (FRB, France), Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) and the Administrative Department for Science and Technology (COLCIENCIAS, Colombia). Call for Expression of Interest: Support for the Coordination of Research and Innovation Programmes and Infrastructures  

Under the ERANet-LAC project (Network of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean Countries on Joint Innovation and Research Activities), a call for expression of interest for Pilot Coordination Actions has been launched. The deadline for submission is 1st October. Read more.

EU-LAC Foundation's Call for Research Projects is open

The Open Call seeks to stimulate research on issues relevant to the relationship between the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The EU-LAC Foundation wants to promote thinking on the potential of the bi-regional partnership among academics on both sides of the Atlantic. Therefore, consortia consisting of researchers from both the EU and the LAC region are particularly valued (but single-region applications are also welcome). The Call is mostly geared towards researchers in the social and economic sciences, but natural sciences projects are encouraged to apply as long as their project makes a valuable contribution to the EU-LAC relationship. Funding of 24,300 Euros (excluding VAT; 30,000 EUR gross) is available in each edition of the Call. The Foundation selects one project per edition. The closing deadline is 30 September 2014.  More information

Bolivian University looking for partners for developing high-altitude technology

Salesian University in Bolivia is interested in partnering with Finnish research institutions in the creation of a laboratorium where the functioning of electronic equipment such as medical and ICT devices in high altitude could be investigated. Contributions are particularly sought from research institutions, civil society organizations, business, policy makers, higher education institutions, science museums, science shops, scientific centres of excellence, local public authorities, cities of scientific culture, innovators and entrepreneurs. European Commission info day on public-private partnerships 21 October in Brussels
An Information Day on the Research PPPs will take place on 21 October 2014 in Brussels. The aim of the event is to give the research community an overview of ongoing activities, and to support the preparation of proposals for the 2015 calls. The info day will also offer plenty of opportunities for networking. More information. 

NET4SOCIETY publishes report on integration of Social Sciences and Humanities in Horizon 2020
The NET4SOCIETY report draws up a number of recommendations to support the implementation of SSH integration in Horizon 2020. Read report

Climate Change and Development Short Course will be organized in Norwich, UK, between September 3-12th 2014.
The purpose of this short course is to equip non-specialists with a broad understanding of what climate change may mean for low-income populations. It will examine the scope and prospects for adapting to change and contributing to emissions reduction in the context of development issues and poverty reduction.
