Developing Finnish Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation between Europe, Africa, Asia and the LAC region


1. Last chance: FinCEAL Plus INFOBANK competition 2017 open until 30 October!

2. FinCEAL Plus is preparing for the China-Finland Co-creating New Solutions for Education and Health -seminar in Beijing, China on 9th October
UniPID/FinCEAL+ and China-Finland Strategic ICT Alliance and Beijing Normal University - Sino-Finnish Joint Learning Innovation Institute (JoLII) are organizing a high-level, bi-regional research seminar focusing on Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation in Health and Education in Beijing, China, on 9th October and related visits on 10th October as part of the Minister of Education of Finland visit to China. 3. Questionnaire for a policy brief on the current status, opportunities and barriers for research cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries
FinCEAL+ and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland are working on a policy brief on the current status, future opportunities and barriers regarding cooperation in research, higher education, technology and/or innovation with Latin American and Caribbean countries. For the past months we have been gathering information on the perspectives of scientists working in Finnish institutions and engaged in cooperation with any of the LAC countries. We are still inviting researchers to contribute to the policy brief by answering the anonymous online questionnaire.  Deadline 9th October. For questions please contact FinCEAL+ LAC coordinator.

4. Save the date – Finnish-South African Cooperation on Internet of Things, 25th October
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is organizing a workshop on Internet of Things as part of a week-long cooperation tour with South Africa. A delegation encompassing private companies, government agencies, academia and city authorities will be visiting Finland from 23rd – 27th October. Scientists interested in cooperation with South Africa both on the topic and other sectors are invited to attend the workshop. More information will be sent out closer to the date. Questions can be directed to the FinCEAL+ Africa coordinator.

5. Save the date – Finnish-Southern African Research and Innovation cooperation in Animal and/or Human Health and Nutrition, 4th December
FinCEAL+ and BioFISA (a programme co-funded by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs), are organizing the above joint event in Helsinki. 15 representatives from projects funded by BioFISA II will be visiting Finland over a 2-week period and will be present at the event. The aim is to bring together Finnish scientists and their counterparts from the SADEC region to broker new relationships, explore opportunities for collaboration and get first-hand information on different support mechanisms that exist for the development of these partnerships. More information on registration will be provided later in the autumn. Questions can be directed to the FinCEAL+ Africa coordinator.

5. FinCEAL Plus Rolling Call for Grants under the Partnership Support Instrument
Through this Call, researchers can apply anytime for any of the following: Travel Grants, Event Grants, Project Preparatory Grants and also the new Research Visit Grants. The planned activity must be related to cooperation with African, Asian or LAC partners, in any of the FinCEAL+ regional thematic areas. More information.

6. News from FinCEAL Plus Grantees

FinCEAL Plus Asia grantee Dr. Windi Muziasari from University of Helsinki attended the SEA-EU-NET closing event in Brussels in April and co-organized a seminar in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in May.
The SEA-EU-NET closing event in Brussels aimed to provide an overview on the activities and results of the SEA-EU-NET project and to assess the impact of the project. FinCEAL Plus supported a joint seminar between University of Helsinki (UH), Finland and University Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia on “Antibiotic Resistance in Human Impacted Environments” which was organized in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in May 2017. EqUIP call for collaborative research on sustainability, equity, wellbeing and cultural connections

The EU-India Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities (EqUIP) is pleased to announce its first research funding call. The call aims to bring together a number of social science and humanities funders in India and Europe to support excellent and innovative research on sustainability, equity, well-being and cultural connections. The emphasis of the research will be on Indian and European dimensions, in both contemporary and historical contexts. More information

ERICENA - European Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence in China

This scholarship programme offers up to 80% financing for foreign scientists to visit Uruguay for the delivery of courses within the framework of a graduate program. More information

Amazon Fund/Brazilian Development Bank Open Call: Consolidation and reinforcement of sustainable and inclusive value chains in the Legal Amazon region.
The projects related to this new public call should aim to strengthen the economic activity of communities capable of serving as forest stewards: traditional peoples and communities, riverine populations, families settled in land reform areas, family farming projects, indigenous peoples and quilombola communities living in the Legal Amazon region. EDCTP2 Work Plan 2017
The work plan describes activities under the second EDCTP programme in 2017. It provides information on EDCTP-managed calls for proposals, including the challenge, scope and expected impact, as well as supporting information about eligibility requirements and other specific conditions for applying. It also contains an overview of the Participating States' Initiated Activities (PSIAs), i.e. activities funded and implemented directly by one or more EDCTP Participating States. More information.

European Commission launches Knowledge Centre to provide scientific evidence on bioeconomy
The European Commission has launched the new Bioeconomy Knowledge Centre to better support EU and national policy makers and stakeholders with science-based evidence in this field. The platform will not primarily generate knowledge, but will collect, structure and make accessible knowledge from a wide range of scientific disciplines and sources. A renewed agenda for higher education in the EU
Effective education and training systems are a foundation of fair, open and democratic societies and of sustained growth and employment. Report highlights opportunities and priorities for future Europe-India research collaboration
A new report published by EqUIP provides a collation and reflection on the EqUIP projects’ activities to enhance the Europe-India research collaboration in the social sciences and humanities, as the support from the European Commission through the FP7 coordination and support action comes to a close. Report by the EU-LAC Foundation: Institutional and Normative Foundations for the Construction of the European, Latin American and Caribbean Space of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation
The report is the result of collaboration between the European Union - Latin America and Caribbean Foundation (EU-LAC Foundation) and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences in Spain (FLACSO España-University of Salamanca), with the support of the Spanish Government, to systematise the empirical evidence concerning the factors which promote integration of a bi-regional area for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology.
