FC+ UPDATES AND FUNDING

1. FinCEAL+ LAC Targeted Travel Grants
FinCEAL+ LAC is offering Targeted Travel Grants for experts based in Finnish institutions to participate in the following events (Please note that the deadline for applications is 2 February!):
  • FAUBAI 2018: Internationalization and Research: Challenges and Strategies, 14-18 April, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    One of the most important events on internalization of higher education in South America organized by the Brazilian Association for International Education.
  • CILAC 2018: Open Science Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean, 22-24 October 2018, Panama City
    The Open Forum for Science in Latin America and the Caribean is a dynamic and inclusive multistakeholder space for debating, planning, and monitoring the role that  Science, Technology, and Innovation play for sustainable development in the LAC region. The key themes for the 2018 Forum are: Sustainable Cities, Resilience and reconciliation and Bioeconomy.

2. FinCEAL+ Africa Targeted Travel Grant Call: Nairobi Innovation Week 2018, 5-9 March
FinCEAL+ Africa is offering Targeted Travel Grants for interested participants to attend the Nairobi Innovation Week 2018. Finland is actively involved at the Innovation Week with multiple events (more info on our website). The call is directed to experts based in Finnish institutions, including those who have already registered or had planned to attend. Deadline for applications is February 7th 2018, and decisions are made the following week. More information and instructions can be found here.

FinCEAL+ Grants still available - apply now!
Researchers can apply anytime for any of the following: Travel Grants, Event Grants, Project Preparatory Grants and Research Visit Grants. The planned activity must be related to cooperation with African, Asian or LAC partners, in any of the FinCEAL+ regional thematic areas. We encourage interested researchers to apply for grants as soon as possible, as the Call will most likely be closed by summer 2018.  More information

4. EU-CELAC Joint call: ICT Platform for Learning and Inclusion
- FinCEAL+ Project Preparatory Funding available for the proposal writing phase

The Academy of Finland will participate in a joint call launched by the EU-CELAC platform in cooperation with ERANet-LAC, specifically in the call’s topic ICT Platform for Learning and Inclusion. The Academy’s Research Council for Culture and Society will provide funding to Finnish researchers who will participate in the projects to be funded. More information on the Aka website. For more detailed information, please check the call. The deadline for applications is 8th March, 2017.

FinCEAL+ Project Preparatory Funding can be applied to support the preparation of the application. Please apply for Prep. Funding by 31st January 2018 at the latest! More information on the Preparatory funding here.

 

5. Relevant Horizon2020 calls for FinCEAL Plus regions


Over the next 3 years, the Commission will seek greater impact of its research funding by focusing on fewer, but critical topics such as migration, security, climate, clean energy and digital economy.

The Horizon 2020 Work Programme (WP) for 2018-2020 has been adopted and new 2018-2019 calls are now available on the Participant Portal. FinCEAL Plus has gathered a selection of relevant calls by region below. Remember to also apply for a Project Preparatory Grant if you are planning on submitting a proposal!

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Calls in 2018
Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) contribute to excellent research, boosting jobs, growth and investment by equipping researchers with the new knowledge, skills and international and intersectoral exposure to fill the top positions of tomorrow and solve current and future societal challenges. The MSCA thrive by being open to all domains of research and innovation, chosen freely by the applicants in a fully bottom-up manner. They are based on the principle of mobility, and researchers can receive funding on the condition that they move from one country to another to acquire new knowledge and develop their research career. TEKES Funding Call For Projects With Commercial Potential: New business from research ideas
Funding is intended for research groups and researchers in research organizations, who want to build a new business based on their research. There are two calls for applications each year, one in the spring and another in the autumn.  More information

EIT CLIMATE – 2018 CALL OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS
The 2018 call for EIT CLIMATE innovation activity and education grants is now open.  The deadline for the call is 2 March 2018. Details on the call and application instructions are available on the EIT Climate website.

Calls for access: JRC opens its laboratories to wider scientific community
From December 2017, researchers will be able to use JRC research facilities located in Ispra (Italy), and thereafter in Geel (Belgium), Karlsruhe (Germany) and Petten (Netherlands), thus helping to maximise the benefits of these world-class infrastructures and laboratories. The calls for access to the first three laboratories are available on the dedicated portal.

Call for submissions: May Day May Day - Tackling complex sustainability challenges by co-creating disruptive innovations, 18 May, Espoo, Finland
Mayday Mayday is the Inaugural Event of Aalto Sustainability Hub, which aims to advance sustainable development through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, teaching and impact. The day brings together science, technology, arts, business and many other voices.  Call for submissions deadline 11 February 2018. More information on the new hub.

Call for submissions: European Development Days, 5-6 June, Brussels, Belgium
Organised by the European Commission, the EDD bring the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. This years theme is "Women and Girls at the Forefront of Sustainable Development: protect, empower, invest". More information

Call for papers: 17th Nordic conference on development economics, 11-12 June, Helsinki, Finland
Interested applicants wishing to present their original research should complete the online application form. Submissions from early-career and female researchers are particularly encouraged. The deadline for paper/extended abstract submissions is 18 March 2018. More information.

Call for papers: 4th Annual Conference of the World-Ecology Research Network: Extractivisms, social movements and ontological formations, 15-18 August, Helsinki

Call for papers: Towards Zero Hunger – Partnerships for impact, 30-31 August, Wageningen, The Netherlands
The conference centres around 2 goals: end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture (SDG2) and create partnerships (SDG17). Deadline for submissions is 15th March 2018. More information

Call for Proposals: 11th Annual International Southern African - Nordic Centre (SANORD) 2018 Conference, 15-17 August, Jyväskylä, Finland
SANORD invites proposals of 150-200 words for paper presentations, panels, workshops and special interest groups (SIG) under the theme Academic Citizenship: Recognition, Resilience or Resistance? Proposals should be submitted electronically through the submissions page. Deadline for submissions is 18th February. Call for Papers: 16th GLOBELICS International Conference, 24-26 October, Accra, Ghana

Call for Nominations: The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) 2018 Prizes
EDCTP prizes recognise outstanding individuals and research teams from Africa and Europe who have made significant contributions to health research. Deadline for submissions is 28th February. More information

Opportunity for Finnish-South Africa,Tunisia, Egypt Cooperation on Water under the ERA-NET Cofund WaterWorks

2nd Call for concept notes for sustainable bioinnovations for smallholder farmers and communities in Eastern Africa
BioInnovate Africa Programme is pleased to announce approximately US$ 3.5 million grant funding over three years (2018–2020) to support scientists, researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs in eastern Africa to link innovative biobased research ideas and technologies to business and the market. Asia-related

New H2020 co-funding mechanism call published by MOST-China
The call targets China-based partners in projects submitted under Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2016/2017 in the areas of agriculture (including food), biotechnologies, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), space, aviation, energy, health, transport, water resources, energy conservation and emission reduction, advanced manufacturing, new materials, and sustainable urbanisation. Deadline for submission of proposals is 9 February.

LAC-related

Call for Papers: 8th Latin American and Caribbean Conference on Social Sciences (CLACSO), 19-23 November, Buenos Aires, Argentina
#CLACSO2018 will offer settings of direct intervention for registered participants as well as lecturers (open panel discussions), special panel discussions with international guests, keynote dialogues and conferences with outstanding figures from political, academic, and social fields who are known for their contribution to the construction of a more democratic, sustainable, and free world. Submission deadline is 12th April. More information

The German Government (Federal Ministry for Education and Research, BMBF) has provided funding and support to the German Bioeconomy Council to organize a second Global Bioeconomy Summit in April 2018. An International Advisory Council will shape the agenda and outcome of the Summit. More information

LAST CHANCE: UNIFI QUESTIONNAIRE – IDEAS ON THE MISSION-ORIENTED APPROACH FOR THE FP9 (2021­­-2027)
With this questionnaire UNIFI would like to outline the most important research priorities for the Finnish universities needing EU-level funding post-2020 and their potential contribution to EU level R&I missions. UNIFI urges you to take part in this consultation as it is a direct contribute to the debate on which kind of research and innovation missions should be introduced in FP9 and as well as an opportunity to make your research area visible in Brussels. In addition several mini-seminars (or one bigger) will be held in Brussels during spring. In this questionnaire, you have also the unique opportunity to suggest the best representatives with the most inspiring ideas from your university to showcase their grand ideas in events to be held in Brussels. Final Declaration of the 5th African Union (AU) - European Union (EU) Summit
At the AU-EU Summit in Cote d'Ivoire on 29th-30th November 2017, leaders from Africa and Europe committed to 4 strategic priorities. High on the list was cooperation on Investing in People - Education, Science, Technology and Skills development. The full declaration.

Global Opportunities – EU-China Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation
Organised by Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (SPI), together with Haidian Science Park, China Science and Technology Exchange Centre (CSTEC) and Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE), the event took place on January 17th 2018 in Beijing, China. China 2030 Research and Innovation Landscape
This report presents the outcome of a cooperative foresight work that took place simultaneously in EU and China, aiming to produce scenarios for the Chinese innovation environment in 2030, drawing special focus in the cooperation potential between EU and China. Download the report here.
