Developing Finnish Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation between Europe, Africa, Asia and the LAC region


1. FinCEAL Plus INFOBANK competition 2017 is now open!

2. Targeted Travel Grant Call:  ICT Proposer’s Day 2017, Budapest, Hungary
FinCEAL Plus has opened a Targeted Travel Grant Call to support the participation of experts from Finnish universities or research institutions interested in attending the ICT Proposer’s Day 2017 in Budapest, Hungary, on November 9-10. Registration for the event will open in June. More information on the website.

3. FinCEAL Plus Africa invites energy researchers to submit papers for the 2nd Africa-EU Renewable Energy Research and Innovation Symposium (RERIS) 2018
The event takes place on 23-26 January 2018 and will be held at the National University of Lesotho On occasion of NULISTICE 2018. FC+ Africa will open a call for targeted travel grants to support the participation of successful submissions. More information on the event.

4. FinCEAL Plus Rolling Call for Grants under the new Partnership Support Instrument
Through this Call, researchers can apply anytime for any of the following: Travel Grants, Event Grants, Project Preparatory Grants and also the new Research Visit Grants. The planned activity must be related to cooperation with African, Asian or LAC partners, in any of the FinCEAL+ regional thematic areas. Read more here.

5. Grant applications during FinCEAL Plus team's summer vacations
FinCEAL Plus Partnership Support Instrument grant applications are not processed during July due to summer holidays. Researchers can still apply anytime, but all applications sent in July will be processed in August and decisions sent in September. Please note that confirmation emails won't be sent in July either. If the event you wish to attend is in September, we strongly recommend applying in June.

6. Reflections on FinCEAL Plus events in May

May 2017 was a busy month for the FinCEAL Plus coordinators. On our website we have published two stories from events held in May
The Second UN Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation, New York

In 15-16 May, FinCEAL Plus together with Prof. Satu Miettinen from the University of Lapland and Dr. Mikko Perkiö from the University of Tampere attended the Second UN Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation in New York. Held under the theme of ‘Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world’, the forum prompted our team to post our reflections on the event.

FinCEAL Plus Africa Side-Event, Pretoria, South Africa

At the end of May, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, FinCEAL Plus Africa organized a side-event to the Ministerial visit of Sanni Grahn-Laasonen to South Africa. The workshop aimed to build on the long-term interest of the two countries in the field of education and to explore new ways of how to take the collaboration forward. The event drew more than 30 participants from both Finland and South Africa working in education companies, higher-education institutions and government representatives. ESOF 9-14 July 2018: call for scientific session proposals prolonged until 23 June
The next EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) will be held in Toulouse from 9 to 14 July 2018. The call for session proposals has been extended until 23 June. More information

Submit your COST Action proposal
COST Actions are a networking instrument for researchers, engineers and scholars to cooperate and coordinate nationally funded research activities. COST Actions allow European researchers to jointly develop their own ideas in any science and technology field. COST does not fund research itself.

COST invites participants to submit proposals for COST Actions contributing to the scientific, technological, economic, cultural or societal knowledge advancement and development of Europe. Multi- and interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged. Deadline is 7 September 2017, 12:00 noon (CET). More information

10th SANORD Annual International Conference "The Role of Universities in Research & Technology Transfer to Improve Livelihoods in Southern Africa”, 28 November – 01 December 2017, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Paper Abstracts, and proposals for Workshops or Panels for the Southern African-Nordic Centre's (SANORD) annual conference are now invited for consideration by the programme committee. In addition, SANORD invites proposals for forming “SANORD Interest Groups”. Deadline for submissions of abstracts and proposals is 15 J​uly 2017. For instructions and guidelines see here.

2017 China-Europe Water Platform (CEWP), Annual High-Level Dialogue Conference and Business Event, 21-22 September 2017, Turku
The conference consists of three parts: During the high-level part of the conference, the ministers are invited to discuss the future development of the CEWP towards a strategic partnership between China and EU to promote water security and green development in China, EU and beyond. OPEN TO THE WORLD: Research & innovation across borders
This booklet looks at six areas in which international projects under the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) and Horizon 2020 funding programmes have found innovative solutions to societal challenges, including those relating to health and the environment. Horizon 2020 Interim Evaluation Results published
The interim evaluation aims to contribute to improving the implementation of Horizon 2020 in its last Work Programme 2018-2020, to provide the evidence-base for the report of the High Level Group on maximizing the impact of EU Research and Innovation programmes and to inform the design of future Framework Programmes. Finland´s preliminary views on the next EU Framework Programme
This position paper presents preliminary views on some guiding principles and general aspects of the EU's 9th Framework Programme for research and innovation, based on a national consultation process among representatives from various interest groups and other stakeholders in addition to authorities. The paper is available both in Finnish and in English here.

OECD recommends: More integrated approach needed in research and innovation development

Policy Brief as Guiding Document for Research and Technology Organisations to Engage in the Process of Internationalisation

Internationalisation enables Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) to access new knowledge and high level partners. This report builds both on insights from the academic literature and practical experiences of RTOs. New global report on food crisis offers benchmark for action needed to avoid future disasters 
Despite international efforts to address food insecurity, around 108 million people in the world were severely food insecure in 2016, a dramatic increase compared with 80 million in 2015, according to a new global report on food crises released in Brussels on 31 March 2017. Read more
