Tom Malone Prize winner announced
Work on display at AGWA Until 2 May 2015 | FREE

The Art Gallery of Western Australia is delighted to announce that the winner of the 2016 Luminous: Tom Malone Prize for contemporary glass artists is Gabriella Bisetto for her work Becoming.

Now in its fourteenth year, the Tom Malone Prize is a highly respected and eagerly anticipated event for contemporary Australian glass artists.

This year’s prize was judged by Art Gallery of Western Australia Director, Stefano Carboni; Art Gallery of Western Australia Foundation Benefactor, Elizabeth Malone; Director of the Jam factory, Brian Parkes; and AGWA Curator of Contemporary Design and International Art, Robert Cook.

The judges said that, “Gabriella Bisetto’s Becoming is instantly, unavoidably compelling. A tangle of tubular curving forms held in a loose spherical formation, we recognise it as a brilliantly bold, ambitious statement in glass. A sculpture with real presence, it interacts with its surroundings wonderfully and, hovering above the floor, it casts shadows that multiply it in curious ways. It is a work that generates much wonder as, in the hands of such a master of her craft, heat transforms glass into fascinating shapes. What makes this work entirely successful is Bisetto’s attention to detail. Coming close to the piece, the viewer sees shifts in colour, as a slight greenish hue becomes evident; small spikes also become noticeable as protective protuberances from the tubular shapes that give the cluster an almost tender quality. Bisetto comments that this work is a hymn to death, decay and the new forms things become; however, these elements cohere into such a punchy and alive form that we couldn’t be happier with this year’s winner."

The Tom Malone Prize 2016 brings together many of Australia's best glass artists. Featuring the fourteen artists short-listed for this year's acquisitive award, it includes Ruth Allen (Melbourne), Andrew Baldwin (Adelaide), Gabriella Bisetto (Adelaide), Brian Corr (Canberra), Mark Eliott and Jack McGrath (both Sydney), Kevin Gordon (Perth), Marc Leib (Perth), Jeremy Lepisto (Canberra), Jessica Loughlin (Adelaide), Kumiko Nakajima (Adelaide), Kirstie Rea (Canberra), Janice Vitkovsky (Adelaide), Zoe Woods (Adelaide) and Jamie Worsley (Perth).

The Tom Malone Prize was established in 2003. An acquisitive prize, each year’s winning entry becomes a part of the State Art Collection. Since its inception, it has facilitated the entry of significant glass works by winners Nick Mount, Jessica Loughlin, Clare Belfrage, Benjamin Sewell, Kevin Gordon, Charles Butcher, Cobi Cockburn, Deirdre Feeney, Brian Corr, Tom Moore and Mel Douglas into the State Art Collection.
