Proximity 2015 Program Announcement
28 October – 8 November 2015
Curated by Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey

Australia’s first Festival of one-on-one performance returns for its fourth year, taking over the Art Gallery of WA from Wednesday 28 October. Proximity Festival 2015 is twelve days of experimental performances, intimate gallery tours, caffeine-fuelled discussions, workshops, and a very special opening party.

For the first time Proximity will take place during Gallery opening hours, with performances embedded into the daily happenings of AGWA’s Collections, hallways, board rooms, rooftop and hidden locations. In these spaces you’ll be invited to encounter a series of 15-minute performances by artists who aren’t afraid to take risks in very intimate ways.

“We are excited to be welcoming the Proximity Festival into the Gallery this year. We can’t wait to see how they animate, enliven and transform our hidden spaces as well as a few exhibition galleries. Beyond this, we’re happy to be working with a team that are creating innovative and compelling platforms for performance. They are true leaders in the field," said Robert Cook, AGWA Curator of Contemporary International Art.

Go on a date as your online self with Jackson Eaton, stargaze in daylight with Emily Parsons-Lord, surrender yourself to a transformative abduction with Phillip Adams, connect with a forgotten landscape using water as your instrument with Mei Saraswati, and indulge in the humour of a family sex drama with Mish Grigor. Audiences can choose to experience a single curated program of four performances or experience multiple programs across the Festival. This year ticket-holders can also visit Day Spa in the WA Focus space where the Proximity prepper will guide audiences into relaxation prior to performances.

“Proximity Festival 2015 sensitively provokes you to reconsider what performance can be. Moving the Festival into the daytime creates a powerful new dynamic for artists and audiences as they navigate the possibilities of participating in a living artwork in a public institution like AGWA,” said Proximity co-curators Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey.

In the lead up to the Festival, the artists will develop their performances during a two-week facilitated Lab at AGWA with internationally renowned Helen Cole of In Between Time (UK) and the Proximity co-curators. Cole is one of the UK’s hottest Artistic Directors and is known for developing projects in unusual locations, disused shopping centres and abandoned warehouses. Together with pvi collective and Proximity, Cole will also lead a three-day public masterclass for artists, curators and producers at CIA Studios from 18-20 October geared towards making participatory performance and finding collective ways to make impossible projects happen.

This year also marks the third annual PARTY FOR 1 : Opening Celebration on Saturday 31 October. Taking place in the back courtyard of AGWA, you’re invited to get up to some intimate mischief with Perth’s favourite local artists and DJs.

All tickets on sale Tuesday 25 August.
