Newly acquired works by video art visionary Ryan Trecartin on display in Perth debut
30 January – 8 May 2016

Forming part of the 2016 Perth International Arts Festival Visual Arts program, this Perth debut of Trecartin’s work features AGWA’s major new acquisitions, the movies Sibling Topics (section a) 2009 and CENTER JENNY 2013. These works were acquired with funds accrued through the Art Gallery of Western Australia Foundation’s highly successful TomorrowFund campaign.

Ryan Trecartin is widely considered to be the artist of our moment. Calvin Tompkins of the New Yorker recently dubbed him 'a video art visionary’ whose work is full of ‘breaking news from the future'.

In the exhibition Ryan Trecartin 6 Movies the Gallery's two intense and inventive works from the Collection are presented alongside four additional movies on loan from the artist’s studio: K-CorealNC.K (section a) 2009, P.opular Sky (section ish) 2009, Items Falls 2013, and Junior War 2013.

Screened daily, back to back, these six movies will immerse visitors in the ecstatic poetics of Trecartin’s practice, providing an in-depth introduction to the work of one of the most innovative and vital artists at work today.

Stefano Carboni AGWA Director said, “the State Art Collection is greatly enriched by the acquisition of Ryan Trecartin’s works CENTER JENNY and Sibling Topics (section a). Trecartin fashions insightful, layered works about identity in today’s world that are at once humorous, entertaining, thought-provoking and deeply stimulating experiences. I am proud we have made such timely and adventurous acquisitions.”

As well as being a favourite of the critics, Trecartin’s work is sure to strike a chord with visitors wanting to see what is possible in the realm of contemporary moving image work, and contemporary art more broadly.

Margaret Moore, Program Manager Visual Arts at the Perth International Arts Festival said, “Presentation of the new Ryan Trecartin works is a welcome force in the 2016 Festival Visual Arts Program and furthers an association with AGWA in the promotion of major contemporary art.”

AGWA curator Robert Cook said, “Ryan Trecartin is an enormously exciting artist. His work is truly spell-binding, utterly infectious. Though full of force and relentlessly energetic, it's important to note that the densely layered narratives that drive the movies are, in fact, the result of an intensive scripting and editing process. Trecartin's signature fast-paced editing creates an entirely new kind of visual poetics, one that foregrounds the mediation of technology, friendship groups, organisational systems (corporate, social, educational, etc) and much more in the construction and re-construction of self. Yet beyond all this, his work is simply hugely and genuinely engaging and amusing."

Trecartin was born in Texas in 1981 and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 2004. His work has been featured in solo presentations at MoMA PSI, the Venice Biennale, Istanbul Modern, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Hammer Museum and the Wexner Centre for the Arts. With Lauren Cornell, he co-curated the New Museum’s third Triennial, Surround Audience 2015. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

The free exhibition runs at AGWA from 30 January until 8 May 2016.
