People's Choice Award Winner Announced
On display at AGWA until 1 June | FREE

The Year 12 Perspectives 2014 People's Choice Award was awarded to Liam Strickland whose work Portrait of the Artist as a Year 12 was voted the most popular by Gallery audiences.

Liam was awarded with a $500 voucher towards the purchase of art supplies to encourage and support his ongoing creative journey. Liam attended Hale School and the graduating students who study Visual Art at the school will also all receive tickets to attend Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices, opening at the Art Gallery of WA in October. One lucky voter also won a double pass to Treasure Ships for casting their vote in this year’s People’s Choice Award.

“Congratulations to Liam for winning this year’s People's Choice Award. His portrait is highly expressive and shows strong technical ability.” said AGWA Curator of Contemporary Australian Art, Jenepher Duncan who was the curatorial manager of the Year 12 Perspectives 2014 exhibition.

In Liam's words, “My intention was to investigate a highly individual approach to portraiture and the expression of form. Marking my eighteenth year of life, and final year of school, I wanted to capture the array of emotions associated with this time in life and express them with a raw, vibrant, and energetic style. I was influenced and inspired by the works of artists such as Joshua Miels, Andrew Salgado, Daniel Richter and older artists including Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse. Their use of vibrant and expressive colours and the raw energy present within their works was something I wanted to include in my own body of work."

Year 12 Perspectives is AGWA’s annual display of work by some of the best graduating visual arts students in the State. This year’s exhibition closes on Monday 1 June.
