Art and fashion collide at AGWA
Tuesday 23 September 2014

AGWA and The Telstra Perth Fashion Festival (TPFF) are proud to present Fashionable Photography: when art and fashion collide in an evening of art and entertainment. This is an exclusive opportunity to view the stunning exhibition Richard Avedon People after hours with commentary from TPFF and AGWA guests on the dualism between fashion and photography.

TPFF fashion photographer Christian Blanchard and AGWA Curator of Contemporary International Art Robert Cook, will feature as guest speakers for the event, along with host, Pip Christmass, one of Perth's premier fashion editors.

Christian Blanchard has made a name for himself as an esteemed photographer and film director across the fashion industry. Recently named by Capture Magazine as one of their top ten photographers, Christian’s career has been hugely successful. Along with lecturing for the Nikon School’s Editorial Fashion Photography course, Christian has worked across international campaigns for clients such as Mimco, Maybelline, Amstel, L’Oreal and Puma.

AGWA Curator of Contemporary and International Art, Robert Cook worked with Christopher Chapman from The National Portrait Gallery and Katrina Dumas from The Richard Avedon Foundation on displaying Richard Avedon People at AGWA. Robert’s writing has been featured in arts publications across Australia and internationally, engaging with areas such as craft and design, photography, and exploratory art practices. He has interviewed numerous artists including John Nixon, Darren Sylvester, Geoff Newton and Ken Bolton (for Broadsheet).
Hosted by Pip Christmass, these inspiring speakers will discuss the various interpretations on Avedon’s portrait and fashion photography from curatorial, cultural history and contemporary perspectives. Avedon’s thematic techniques will also be examined, including the use of lighting and creating a field of equivalency between fashion garment and model, the balance between garment as icon and star as icon, and a discussion of the blurred lines between fashion journalism and artistic pursuits.

Along with the exhibition and discussion, guests will enjoy the smooth jazz undertones of
The Graham Wood Quintet. Graham has toured extensively and worked with many respected international artists including Frank Foster, Sheila Jordan and Sam Rivers.  He is also the co-owner of The Ellington Jazz Club and is founder and artistic director of The Perth International Jazz Festival.

A cash bar and food will be available on the night.

About the exhibition
Richard Avedon is regarded as one of the most influential photographers of his time, known for redefining photographic conventions across the fashion and political worlds. With work from 1949  ̶  2002, Richard Avedon People is an arresting display of Avedon’s achievements in the art of black and white portraiture photography.
His exquisitely simple compositions capture the essence of his subjects in charming and disarming ways. In the show, instantly recognisable and influential artists, celebrities, and political activists including Truman Capote, Elizabeth Taylor, Twiggy, Malcolm X, and Bob Dylan are presented alongside portraits of the unknown or long forgotten.

“Richard Avedon was regarded as one of the most progressive photographers of his time. His impact on the landscapes of fashion and political photography is almost unparalleled,” said AGWA Director Stefano Carboni.

“He had the ability to capture what many other photographers could not – the human quality,” Stefano continued. “The opening of Richard Avedon People was incredibly exciting and I’m very pleased to be partnering with The Telstra Perth Fashion Festival to further combine the worlds of fashion and photography at this exclusive event.”
