Virtual Plant Tour Focused on Product Handling Solutions
During the annual Virtual Plant Tour, held in conjunction with The Precast Show, Besser focused on two product handling installations. At each facility, Besser equipment seamlessly replaced a competitive system. At York Building Products in York, Pennsylvania, an LSC Conversion was installed that services two Vibrapacs® while at Johnson Concrete in Concord, North Carolina, a new Besser Pallet Transport System was installed.
Both facilities are benefiting from smoother operations and improved efficiencies. If you missed seeing the tours live, watch them by clicking the links below.
Six suppliers presented plants from across the globe during the live event. After all the tours, winners were drawn for the prizes provided by the suppliers. Ralph Viola, Jr., a third-generation concrete products producer from V. Zappala & Co. in Rensselaer, New York, was the winner of the $500 YETI prize pack supplied by Besser.
Our sincere thanks go out to Johnson Concrete and York Building Products for allowing us to highlight their new Besser equipment.

2022 Besser Pipe Scholarship Recipients Announced
Scott Kennedy, Vice President of Pipe and Precast, and Kim Spahn, President of ACPA’s Research and Education Foundation, teamed up to announce the 2022 recipients of the $2500 Besser Pipe Scholarship during the opening session of the ACPA Pipe School and Trade Show in January 2022.
This year, the selection committee felt two students were equally deserving, so two scholarships were awarded. One scholarship was funded by Besser Company and the other by the ACPA Foundation. The first recipient was Joseph McDaniel who is studying Concrete Industry Management at Middle Tennessee State University. Joseph began his relationship with concrete as a 9-year-old working alongside his grandpa and dad, placing and finishing concrete.
The second recipient was Connor Davidson who is studying Civil Engineering at Texas Tech University. In Connor’s application, he stated that whatever role he’s in, he commits 110% of himself in every aspect of it. We’re looking forward to seeing this play out as he reaches his goal of becoming a Civil Engineer who has a fondness for concrete pipe.
Recently retired Besser CEO, Kevin Curtis, was inducted into Allan Block’s Always Better Wall of Fame. This honor is reserved for people that have helped Allan Block on their quest for “Always Better.” Throughout his career, Kevin supported Allan Block in any way he could. In AB’s early years, he collaborated closely with Bob Gravier, AB Founder, and later with Tim Bott, AB President, and the rest of the AB Team.
Kevin was humbled by this recognition and treasures the strong relationships he’s formed with members of the AB Team. On behalf of AB, Ryan Suszek, CEO, (pictured left) presented Kevin with a leather AB briefcase, a framed tribute, and a personalized glass block etched with his image. A twin glass block is part of the permanent wall display in Allan Block’s Minnesota headquarters.
Rodney Lang Retires
The employee-owners of Besser Company congratulate Rodney Lang on his 37-year career. He retired on 31 March 2022. Rodney’s engineering background, outgoing nature, and resourcefulness allowed him to apply his talents in a wide variety of roles which impacted producers and fellow employee-owners worldwide.
After graduating from Lake Superior State University, Rodney was hired as an Electrical Engineer for capital equipment and retrofits. His leadership skills emerged, and he was promoted to Electrical Engineering Manager. In this position, he developed a passion for collaborating directly with customers and was promoted to Global Technical Service Manager.
The dual role of Customer Service Manager and Sales Representative for Australia was next. It provided the opportunity for him and his wife, JoEllen, to feed their adventurous spirits. The adventures continued when he assumed the Sales and Technical Support Representative position for the US West Coast.
Together they built strong relationships with producers from Alaska to Arizona.
They moved back to Alpena in 2019 so he could apply his extensive equipment and industry knowledge to his role on the newly created Technical Service Support Team and be closer to family. In this role, he served as a liaison between sales, engineering, and manufacturing and was able to retain some of his field sales responsibilities.
His retirement plans include lots of family time and taking to the open road. Rodney shared, “It’s time to ride.” Once Fall arrives he’s talked about spending time working on Besser projects when needed.
