Francis Boag’s unique point of view is formed from colours, shapes and rhythmic marks that allow the image to develop. Boag’s work lives in the pleasurable yet complicated sphere of triggering memory. He likes to instigate a memory in his viewer from a combination of visual references; these include a Wicklow Glen, a Spanish hill farm or even an object of significance. The memories he derives the work from include such objects as champagne, flowers, ribbons and wrapped birthday presents and hints of them can be seen carefully placed throughout.
The pleasure in Boag’s work is key to its success, there’s a joy to his painting that radiates from the canvas and becomes a sharing of happy memories with each person who views it. His interpretations of the world he sees around him, whether it is the view from his studio window, or a grand palazzo in Venice, are all imbued with an optimism and harmony which delights. His colours grow and sing in carefully constructed designs, and the uplifting quality to his work can turn the white cube of the gallery space into an optimistic and glowing art space that flourishes.
It is these unique factors that have led both to a combination of critical acclaim and commercial success. These bright, buoyant and resplendent images, crafted through mark making, colour manipulation and careful placement of significant visual markers lead to a view of the art object as a point of the celebration, joy and hope that can be found in the everyday.
