Welcome to the GCVS August 2017 Newsletter!

The Third Sector Interface (TSI) partners had a very positive and productive meeting with Glasgow City Council's Cabinet on Monday 21st of August. This was the first time the TSI has been invited to formally present to Glasgow City Council leaders and we're pleased to report that an open and constructive conversation took place regarding ways we can improve relations with the local authority moving forward, based on the asks in our Election Manifesto.  It marked the start of a regular dialogue in recognition of our TSI role to support and represent Glasgow’s Third Sector and we’ll keep you updated as discussions develop.

One of our first tasks in partnership with Glasgow City Council will be to support a Third Sector Summit which will take place in October  with TS representatives from across the city.  We're really looking forward to engaging in this event which will begin to explore how we can achieve the transformed relationship between Glasgow City Council and Glasgow's Third Sector that we called for in our Manifesto for Change.  We’ll say more about this in our next issue.
Meanwhile, read on for all our latest news, training and events.

Universal Basic Income - Can Scotland Lead The Way?

On the 29th of August, we held an event on Universal Basic Income in partnership with The RSA Scotland. UBI radically challenges current thinking and policy on welfare and has the potential to significantly address poverty and inequality. Glasgow is developing a UBI pilot and we were asked to raise awareness and encourage debate among our members on this important issue.

We were thrilled to have Patrick Harvie MSP, Councillor Matt Kerr, Annie Miller from CBINS and carers advocate, Lynn Williams, as guest speakers. A lot of interesting discussion was generated, which continued on Twitter long after the event itself had finished!

Read more about the event here.

Glasgow's Community Plan - Implications for the Third Sector

The Third Sector Forum held an event on the 30th of August to discuss and respond to Glasgow's Draft Community Plan, paying particular focus to the implications it could have for the Third Sector.

Bailie Russell Robertson and Shaw Anderson from Democratic Services at Glasgow City Council spoke about the plan as part of the consultation with a large Third Sector audience.

The consultation officially closes today but, given the timing of the event, we have been assured that late responses will be taken into consideration so we'd encourage all of our Third Sector colleagues to send in their views - click here to fill in the survey!

Report Launch - The Third Sector Role in Early Learning and Childcare (ELC)

As part of the above event on Glasgow's Draft Community Plan, our Everyone's Children project launched their latest report which explores the role of the Third Sector in Early Learning and Childcare in Glasgow and how the sector could be developed to support forthcoming increases to free childcare hours.

The research highlights a number of key issues that respondents felt should be addressed to ensure the Third Sector can contribute to the expansion of Early Learning and Childcare. It also sets out the role of GCVS and the other TSI partners in supporting this.
