FLP News
Welcome!

We have new leadership on our Board of Directors.  Missie Forbes has stepped in as our new President, and Russell Lenth will serve as Treasurer.  We wish to thank both Bonnie Penno and Carol Kirsch for their wonderful service in these respective roles.  Bonnie will continue to serve on the Board in the role of Past President.
Daytime Warming Shelter

The Iowa City Daytime Warming Shelter has closed its doors for the winter.  In addition to our regular on-site service, FLP delivered an average of 29 meals a day to the shelter, Monday through Saturday, from November 24th to March 26th.  Many thanks to all who contributed to this wonderful effort!

Covid-19 Safety Update

FLP will continue to serve meals on a to-go basis from the side door of our kitchen through the summer.  We will consider opening the dining room in the fall if circumstances dictate that we can do so safely for our guests and volunteers.
We're happy to report that all of our staff and many volunteers are currently vaccinated!
Eco-Friendly Packaging

Thanks to a grant from Johnson County, which mandates the purchase of compostable packaging supplies, we've been able to procure needed items made from sustainable materials.  Ever heard of forks made from cornstarch?  We've got 'em!  We're grateful to be able to do our part to protect the environment.
President, FLP Board of Directors
Born and raised in Iowa City, Missie Forbes, our 2021 Board President, has years of experience in non-profit work and has a passion for making Iowa City the best place in the world to live. Her interest in the Free Lunch Program began in 2015, when she began volunteering on a serving team. She has been on the FLP board since 2019 and is passionate about increasing the visibility of the FLP mission in our community. She is also the Executive Director at 4Cs and a co-founder of the Neighborhood NESTS Project.
National Volunteer Month
Volunteers from the Unitarian Universalist Society take a quick break at the FLP picnic tables.
April is National Volunteer Month and we can't say enough about our wonderful volunteers.  They are the heart and soul of the Free Lunch Program and their generosity, compassion, hard work, and good food make it all work.  We appreciate them this month and every single day of the year!
FLP Co-Director, Diane Platte, is an Americorps Green Iowa Volunteer with expertise in green living.  In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, Diane shared these ways she's observed FLP volunteer teams being environmentally friendly:
  • Composting Food Scraps
  • Recycling Aluminum
  • Reducing Plastic:
  • Serving Plant-Rich Meals
  • Diverting or Avoiding Food Waste
If you'd like to learn more, please see these resources or talk to Diane.
