UUSC Committee Report for 2019

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. (UUSC) is an independent nonsectarian 501 c3 nonprofit membership organization. They are a leading voice for human rights and social justice in the United States and the world.  UUFB is a member and supports this organization. This year we had an information table at the Social and Environmental Justice Committee Fair during coffee hour.

Each year UUSC has a fundraiser that is entitled Guest at Your Table.  This year the theme is entitled “Women Leaders, Strong Communities”.  On the November 24 service, UUFB members and friends will receive more information and a small cardboard box to put on their dining room table to collect change each time they sit down to a meal.  The box with donations will be collected Christmas Eve or Day and sent to UUSC as our contribution to UUSC’s efforts.

Allendale Correctional Documentary

SC-ETV will show a documentary about Allendale Correctional Institution next week. ACI is the facility that Ancient Sea Island Continuum visits monthly to provide religious and ethical instruction to the Wiccan inmates. Last week, eight volunteers from UUFB traveled to ACI to deliver a tasty Low Country thanksgiving meal to the Wiccan prisoners.  Set your DVRs to get an inside look at ACI and learn more about the Character Restoration Initiative, November 21st at 8:30 pm and November 25th at 8 pm.

The Welcoming Congregation Committee Needs You!

As many of you know, we are a Welcoming Congregation.  Newcomers may not know exactly what that means.  Do we welcome everyone?  Yes, we do, however being a Welcoming Congregation means we have gone through a program to learn to be mindfully welcoming to our LGBTQIA+ community.  UUFB went through that training some years ago, but that doesn’t mean we stop there.

Our Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations asks us to continue to be mindfully welcoming throughout the year, and renew our status annually.  Therefore, the need for a Welcoming Congregation Committee does not go away.  Currently the Welcoming Congregation Committee consists of only three members, mostly due to members moving, and has no chair.

If you are interested in joining the Welcoming Congregation or would like to learn more about what we do throughout the year, please contact Jeanine Darville through the Fellowship administrator at 843-522-1765 or admin@uubeaufort.org

Thank you!

Braving The Wilderness Book Groups Forming!

As we know,  Minister Emeritus, Rev. Nan urged us in her sermon during Founders Weekend to read Brene Brown's Braving the Wilderness together. Rev Lori has embraced this idea.  In chatting with many of you, there is a lot of interest in doing just that.  We are planning an organizational meeting to find out just how many of us are interested and how we would like to proceed.  The organizational gathering will be Sunday,  December 15th at 11:30.  Because we are expecting that there may be quite a few of us, we may need to break up into groups, based on our needs and interests.  We hope to have the book group(s) begin in January.

Several approaches to reading and discussing the book can be considered:

  • A one-time discussion upon completion
  • A four - six part discussion every other week as we read.
  • Shared facilitation
  • Group sizes: 6-10 members
  • Choose one or more possible meeting times.
  • Consider using Quaker, Parker Palmer's Circle of Trust Touchstones as a guide for discussion.

Join us for this organizational meeting.  Sign up then for the format you prefer, and choose a time that works for you!  And if you would like to see Brene Brown in action, you can watch her TED Talk here.

THE CHRISTIAN AFFINITY GROUP
PLANS BOOK DISCUSSIONS FOR 2020

The Christian Affinity Group met on November 3, 2019 and had a lively discussion of books for reinterpreting Christianity. Members suggested a wide variety of excellent books and decided on the following to read and discuss. Discussion leaders are also listed. The meetings will take place in the Religious Education room at 11:30 after the Sunday coffee hour. All meetings are open to UUFB members and friends.

January  12, 2020: “Why Christianity Must Change or Die”  by Bishop John Shelby Spong. Discussion leader: Jay Weidner.

March 8, 2020: “The Simple Faith of Mr. Rogers” by Amy Hollingsworth. Discussion Leader: Ben Sellers.

May 17, 2020: “Christ for Unitarian Universalists” by Scotty McLennan. Discussion Leader: Rev. Lori.

Also mark your calendars for the popular Christmas Carol Hymn Sing and Pot luck on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at 5:00PM in Fellowship Hall.

A Challenge has been issued!
Will you accept?

The Stewardship Committee has received a Challenge Pledge from John and Cori Hoffman.  They have offered to match future 2020 pledges submitted up to $1,500.  So we need your help!

How this works: if a new pledge for 2020 comes in for $500 then they will match that amount, leaving $1,000 still to be matched.  If you have already pledged, you are welcome to increase yours because this will also count towards the matching pledge from the Hoffmans.

So please get your pledges in because that makes your challenge-matching pledge worth double its amount! Let’s see how quickly we can reach the magic number of $1,500!

Warmest regards,
Grace M Drake

Soul Matters Small Groups!

Are you interested in going deeper with the Soul Matters themes? Want to talk with a few others about what those themes lead you to ponder and wonder? Craving a place where personal joys and sorrows are shared? Soul Matters Small Group Ministry may be for you.

Our first small group met during the last program year, and had deep, thoughtful, interesting conversations using the Soul Matters small group materials.

If you’re interested, please contact Rev. Lori asap! Have some questions? Ask!

Habitat Faith Build Events!

UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the Faith Build house, a project of Habitat for Humanity of the LowCountry.  Our volunteers who have gone through the introductory training have already been emailed, but we'd like to highlight some upcoming events open to the general public. Please note the dates have changed.

10am – Saturday November 23 - The Dataw-2 Build house (2521 Mossy Oaks Road in Beaufort), which is next door to the Faith Build, will be dedicated and the keys presented to the new owners.  If you worked on the Faith Build, chances are you walked over and worked on the Dataw-2 build as well.  It should be rewarding to see the Sawyer family take ownership of their new house.

12 noon - Saturday December 14 - The Faith Build house (2523 Mossy Oaks Road in Beaufort) will be dedicated and the keys presented to the Green family.  You are encouraged to attend this event if you volunteered on the house, or if you contributed financially.  UUFB made a significant contribution in both ways, and it would be fun to have to a good showing.

Also, I'd like to remind you that there remain opportunities to do items from the final punch list of the Faith Build on Thursdays, 8am-12. Sign up at https://lowcountryhabitat.charityproud.org/VolunteerRegistration/Calendar/542

Any questions? Contact Tom Hlaban.

The Time Is Now...
"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give."-Winston Churchill
Pledges are still coming in and we currently have around $117,500. That is great but we have not reached our $130,000 goal.  We have received pledges from 36 units and 4 Friends of the congregation.

The deadline has passed but it is not too late. Our congregation is a loving and generous one.  We have confidence that you will come through and we will reach our goal.  A report of the pledges is being compiled for the Board to help with the budget.  Let’s show the Board our support by getting those pledges in!

If you are concerned about making regular payments, please know that pledges  may be paid in various ways such as lump sum, scheduled installments (i.e. through your bank’s Bill Pay) or even on an irregular basis.  It is whatever works best for your financial situation.

Do you need a pledge form?  You may print one from the Stewardship page on the website or pick one up from the Stewardship tray on the office counter.  There are also extra packets in the tray too.

Note: It is now November, so the end of the year is coming up soon!
Are you caught up on your 2019 pledges?
