Welcome to our March Enews

Last week Food South Australia hosted our ever-popular Hall of Fame Breakfast. Maurice Crotti AO joined me on stage to share his wealth of experience in the sector and tell us the story of Balfours. We would like to again thank Maurice for his time and his willingness to share the learnings coming from the ups and the downs of this iconic brand over some 165 years. Also a big thanks to all our Hall of Fame inductees for hosting their tables at the event.
 
The value of information about your business – collecting it, understanding it and using it to your commercial advantage was a strong message coming out of Maurice’s presentation.  This is even more important as our industry stands on the cusp of accessing the potential of Industry 4.0.
 
Reliable information is also the focus of our biennial State of the Industry survey, launched earlier this week. I urge all South Australian food and beverage manufacturers and producers to complete this survey. This is the most direct way to ensure your voice is heard and your priorities are considered by those who make the policies and regulations affecting our industry. The more feedback we have, the more effectively we can advocate on your behalf. You can complete the survey by clicking here.
 
Information provided by our members has also underpinned our recent submissions to a range of State Government consultations, including the business case for the Riverland Wine and Food Centre and reviews of the current container deposit scheme and single-use plastics.  We are currently seeking member input for the State Government’s consultation on a new industry policy. You can view a summary of key advocacy activities and calls for feedback for submissions on the advocacy page on our website, and please remember that members can raise issues affecting your business with me at any time, with your confidentiality assured.
 
Food South Australia also took a new step last week with the launch of our members’ product recall insurance cover package. We are pleased to be working with Victual to deliver this benefit to our members. Victual will be presenting a product recall insurance 101 workshop on 2 April for food and beverage manufacturers seeking a better understanding of what the various product recall insurance policies actually cover, how insurers evaluate risks when deciding your premiums, and how they evaluate claims. I also encourage food and beverage manufacturer members to book for our upcoming workshop focusing on the new Product Information Form on 19 March. This workshop will explain in detail how the new form works and how it can help you streamline efficiencies in your business. The workshop will be held at Beerenberg Farm and will also include an opportunity to tour the Beerenberg facilities.
 
We were pleased to have Queenie Qin from our China office in town for a visit in February. Over a jam-packed week Queenie and I visited a number of our export level members, travelling to Port Lincoln and around Adelaide. Queenie is an experienced, energetic and well-connected representative for Food SA and is already starting to deliver great value for our members in this important market. Tasting Australia Inbound Buyers Tour
Food South Australia and the Department for Trade, Tourism and Investment are hosting a visit to Tasting Australia for senior decision makers and influencers in key Asian markets on 9 April. The event will include an opportunity for existing and emerging food and beverage exporters to exhibit their products and gain insights into these important markets. Find out more here.
Food South Australia PubChat – Tuesday 19 March
Peregrine Group CEO for OTR Warren Wilmot and his OTR category managers will be our invited guests at the first Food South Australia members only PubChat for 2019. Warren will provide us with a brief overview of OTR's growth plans and will be available to chat to members about products and trends for the petrol and convenience distribution channel.

Strong start for the Coopers Maltings
Coopers new malting plant has already reached 90% capacity with Australia’s fast growing craft brewers and whisky distillers enthusiastically embracing the opportunity to access high quality malt.
Dairy award winners
Congratulations to members Paris Creek Farms on taking out the Gold Medal for their Organic Dairy Bio-Dynamic Full Cream Whole Milk and La Casa Del Formaggio who also won Gold for their Emporium Selection Bocconcini at the 2019 Sydney Royal Show Dairy Awards. Also in the winning circle with a swag of bronze and silver medals were more products from Paris Creek Farms, Tweedvale Milk, Beston Pure Foods and MOO Premium Foods. Well done, all!

Packaging award nominations for HMPS
HMPS has been nominated for two awards in the upcoming Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association Awards of Excellence for their Compact Frame Design and Robotic Pouch Unloader & Drying System for Pet Food. The winners will be announced on 27 March.

Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market has begun replacing all plastic straws, cups, cutlery, carrier bags and barrier bags alternatives and will ban plastic completely from April.

Fellowship to further SA food and beverage industry
Applications for 2019 Churchill Fellowships are now open. The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust is offering talented Australians the opportunity to investigate issues overseas that are of importance to all parts of Australia, including rural and regional Australia. Disaster resilience
The South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission is currently finalising South Australia’s first Disaster Resilience Strategy and are seeking input from small business owners to better understand their levels of preparedness, motivations and barriers to preparing for disruptions, and the tools or support that could be of assistance. Food South Australia in Action
Food South Australia China Office Representative Queenie Qin had a busy week in South Australia visiting Export level members and learning more about our great South Australian products. Her itinerary included a visit to Port Lincoln and a stop at Beerenberg where she shared a taste of their famous strawberries with Managing Director and Food SA Board member Anthony Paech.

Food South Australia was asked to assist the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel with their South Australian produce showcase. Head Chef Francesco Manelli, seen here with Woodside Cheese Wrights' Kris Lloyd and Food SA CEO Catherine Sayer, was especially keen to profile South Australian produce as the first of a series of regional showcase menus in the hotel's restaurant, Mode Kitchen & Bar. View the photos here.
