I am sending this letter to senior leaders of organisations that have used St Katharine’s over the years and also to some of my own contacts in the charity and business world.

In these extraordinary times, the challenges of leadership have never been more demanding, and yet our normal personal support structures have become fragile for many of us.

Invitation to Explore Soulful Leadership in a Time of Crisis – Online Conference

Over the last months, I have found inspiration from 3 leaders with a variety of backgrounds and incredible experiences of leading through crisis and have asked them to come together with me to create a conference made up of a series of workshops exploring different themes around what we have termed Soulful Leadership. John Casson, former UK ambassador to Egypt, Julia Ogilvy, experienced board member recently returned from leadership work at Harvard, and Andrew Rodgers former senior executive at HSBC who created a programme of executive retreats around healthy leadership culture.

I would like to personally invite you to come on a journey with the four of us as we explore together ways of being leaders that are truly authentic, making use of inspirational practices that we have found helpful; and discovering a creative and supportive virtual space where we can come together for shared learning and mutual encouragement.

The virtual conference starts on Tuesday 28th with a 90 minute introduction to the people and the format. And then 4 interactive 90 minute workshops 10-1130 each morning Monday May 4th to Thursday 7th May.

There will also be an invitation to a conference in real life on the 6th October at the Royal Foundation, for those who will relish physically eating, drinking and chatting together which will build on the work we have done online and allow us to share how we are putting good principles into our own practice as leaders.

These events are by invitation, so please let me know if there are others who we should be inviting to this gathering.

Strategic Executive Coaching Offer for Charity Leaders

As a senior leader, who has been an Executive Coach for many years, I also know how valuable it is to receive strategic coaching personally. This is more important than ever in a time of crisis. We have to be able to care for and develop ourselves as we seek to care for, motivate and lead others.

Strengths Unleashed is a new Executive Coaching organisation, founded by Andrew Dyckhoff who is a Mentor at Merryck & Co. They have adopted the Royal Foundation of St Katharine as their London base and it has been a pleasure to get to know them in recent months. Through in-depth work using some of the latest diagnostic tools, they can help senior leaders understand their strengths and support them to achieve high performance for themselves and their teams.

Conference Details


A journey towards authentic leadership.

In the last month the world has changed and the shock to our nations, organisations, culture and to our own selves has been hard to understand.

RFSK is inviting senior leaders from a range of organisations to come together for a series of online workshops to learn from each other, to have a chance to reflect on who we are as leaders in this crisis and how we help our own organisations adapt and prepare for the new world that is emerging.

Four leaders from different areas of practice and experience will host four mornings and share their experience and their soulful practice that has sustained them in their own journeys.

As well as personal experience and leadership ideas, we will be trying to model and share some of the practices we have found helpful around the themes of silence, reflective reading of inspirational texts, gratitude, empathy, accountability and self-awareness. We hope delegates will be willing to share what has helped them especially through recent times.

These online workshops are setting the scene for a leaders gathering on October 6th when there is the chance to gather physically at the Royal Foundation in London and share stories of how we have navigated the chaos and are preparing for the next steps in rebuilding and reimagining how things will be.

John Casson, CMG was British Ambassador in Egypt from 2014 to 2018, where he led one of the biggest ever evacuations of British nationals and pioneered people-centred diplomacy with a huge social media following.  From 2010 to 2014, John served in 10 Downing Street as foreign policy adviser to the Prime Minister, at David Cameron’s side through all his world leader meetings, EU summits, and the wars in Libya, Syria and Afghanistan.  John has also worked in Kenya, Washington, Brussels HM Treasury and the Home Office.  He is an Associate Fellow at Chatham House, a trustee of the Rose Castle Foundation for international reconciliation, and a commentator on foreign policy, leadership and the inner life.

Where does our power, purpose and presence come from?  
Looking at world leaders and people we have seen up close, we will identify different types of power we can wield, the drivers that shape us as leaders, and how these are exposed in times of crisis.  A chance to reflect on your own point on the journey from leadership shaped by status, skills and control, to leading with deeper freedom, meaning and presence.  We will explore how inner life practices and awareness can support our growth towards more authentic, life-giving and transformational leadership.

Julia Ogilvy is an experienced and award-winning business leader and social entrepreneur with a passion for social justice. She has been on the board of more than 20 organisations including Lloyds TSB Scotland, the University of St Andrews, Tearfund and Project Scotland and was an advisor to Gordon Brown on social action projects. 

She was ordained as an elder in the Church of Scotland and has written two books, Turning Points and Women in Waiting. Julia graduated from Harvard Divinity School (HDS) in 2018 with a Masters in Theological Studies and trained in hospital chaplaincy in Boston. She co-founded an Executive Education programme called Making Change at Harvard University (HDS) and has been a facilitator at a number of retreats and conferences. 

Finding the inner resources 
As we find ourselves in a moment of extraordinary transition and vulnerability in the world, we will need to think about the way that we lead. This is a time for us to reflect on the inner resources that we can develop; to learn from each other’s experiences and consider what tools can support us on this journey. Spiritual traditions and rituals have much to offer us as we cultivate empathy and learn to listen deeply, allowing space for grieving, finding room for gratitude and ultimately developing stronger communities around us.

The Venerable Roger Preece 

Roger is an experienced coach to business leaders helping with both personal and organisational development. He was previously a founding partner of Capco, the global financial markets solutions company. Prior to this, he was Chief Operating Officer at Sumitomo’s  global investment bank with operations in New York, Hong Kong, London and Tokyo. He started his consulting career at Accenture.

He is currently Master of the Royal Foundation of St Katharine, which is an ancient charity that currently works with national and international charities, providing space for them to do creative work. He has been chair of a hospice, and on the board of a Multi Academy Trust. As an Archdeacon in the Church of England he has supported over 50 churches in their work across the North West of England.
 
Modelling Post Viral Scenarios and Preparing for the new future
The current crisis on one level seems to be changing almost everything that seemed constant in society. There are interesting models of human and organisational behaviour that can help us make sense of it all. Simon Walker’s model of Front and Back Stage in organisations is particularly helpful, as well as his reflections on Undefended Leadership. Drawing on a variety of sources, this workshop will frame some different scenarios that will help us to lead our organisations through this current viral crisis and beyond.

Andrew Rodgers is the founder of re-envisage, a consultancy specialising in helping leadership teams connect, reflect and thrive.  Prior to re-envisage Andrew had a 21 year career with HSBC where he held a number of roles ranging from country and regional management within the insurance business, global account management, through to sustainability and wellbeing directorship where he developed and facilitated leadership programmes.  He has worked across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas with global and country management teams, as well as specialist teams of actuaries, lawyers and accountants to re-envisage healthy effective leadership culture.  Andrew is an AoEC qualified Executive Coach and lives in London with his wife Angela and their four children. 

Leadership Tools for effective change in a time of crisis
Having identified an area to focus on improving, often one of the greatest challenges can be successfully realising the change you want to see.  Combining neuroscience with psychology and scripture, I will share a tool for achieving effective and lasting change, which can be applied in your personal, family or business circumstances.
