Skybox Out of the Box Challenge Added to 2012-2013 Competition Season
We are joining forces with Skybox Imaging and asking our participants, “If you had access to daily high-resolution satellite imagery and high-definition video of thousands of locations on the planet from space, how would you use that data to change the world?”
As part of the partnership with Skybox, Spirit of Innovation Challenge teams have the opportunity to enhance their products using the latest in satellite technology. As an incentive, one team will win a prize called the Skybox Out-of-the-Box scholarship of $5,000 and an invitation to the Conrad Foundation’s Innovation Summit.
To be eligible for the Skybox award, teams must identify ways timely satellite imagery would be used in the development of their innovative products. Possible satellite application samples include comparison of environments pre and post large-scale weather events, detecting vegetation change and monitoring construction. Learn more here.

Team Gulliver Receives Two Prestigious Awards
Here’s a resounding hip-hip-hooray! to team Operation Gulliver International. The team earned the prestigious Heart of Haiti Award in 2012 for their development of a water filtration device that will help provide clean, safe drinking water to the people of Haiti.  This award is given to 11 people around the world yearly. Team Gulliver has been working for several years under the direction of teacher Claude Charron to develop clean water solutions for the country of Haiti. The system they developed is the one they presented at the Spirit of Innovation Challenge and earned top honors in the Clean Energy category.
The team’s design also garnered success in the White House Youth Sustainability Challenge. The competition challenged youth from across the nation to submit a video and tell the world what they are doing in their communities to foster sustainability and help conserve America and the world. Gulliver Schools student Alexis Wong represented the team at a winner’s event in Washington D.C. August 31. The Operation Gulliver International team earned Most Innovative Approach, one of just five awards that the challenge recognized. Wong received the opportunity to meet some of the most influential individuals working on Sustainable Development in the United States and around the world.

Opportunity for Conrad Challenge Students: Free Entrepreneurship Program
Spirit of Innovation Challenge participants are invited to take advantage of Udacity’s free online class: Entrepreneurship 245: The Lean LaunchPad – How to Build a Startup. In the program participants will learn the key tools and steps to build a successful startup (or at least reduce the risk of failure).
The program is an introduction to the basics of Steve Blank's famous Customer Development process, where entrepreneurs "get out of the building" to gather massive amounts of customer and marketplace feedback, and then use that feedback to continuously iterate and evolve their startup business models, improving the chances of success at every step.  The "Lean Launchpad" curriculum has been chosen by the National Science Foundation to be the model class for entrepreneurship, and it is being taught already on more than 70 campuses. Celebration of Innovation at Houston Launch Event

The Houston Teachers Launch Event was a huge success! About 30 guests battled foul weather and road flooding to learn about how the Spirit of Innovation Challenge would benefit their organization. Guests included challenge partners, champions, mentors, educators and STEM directors. A special thank you goes out to our guest speakers 2012 Spirit of Innovation Challenge Health and Nutrition winner Fabian Fernandez-Han and his father/coach Peter Han. We could not ask for more inspiring advocates for our program.
