Session Wrap-Up

LFF Commentary
June 2014

At 6:00 p.m. on Monday, the 2014 Louisiana Legislature adjourned with the Sergeant at Arms declaring, "Sine Die."

This session may go down as the most pro-family session in Louisiana history.

LFF and our capitol allies, blocked bad legislation, advanced good legislation and amended numerous bills to make them better.

Louisiana Family Forum is grateful for the service of each of our state legislators who work diligently to represent the Louisiana families.

Our 2014 Legislative Scorecard will evaluate in greater detail the voting pattern of each legislator on key bills.

Public Rules on
Private Schools

Friedman Foundation
May 2014

With the number of school choice programs doubling over the past five years, the need for context and understanding is critical. The Friedman Foundation has issued this report about measuring the regulatory impact of state statutes regarding private schools and school choice programs.

In the report, the Friedman Foundation takes a look at the growth of school choice programs that have expanded over the last few years and brings important context and comparisons to the forefront for policy makers and school choice advocates.

The project, "Public Rules on Private Schools: Measuring the Regulatory Impact of State Statutes and School Choice Programs," addresses several core questions while taking a step back to see how school choice programs have affected private schools in terms of regulations.

Sex Change?

Family Research Council
June 2014

You can now change your sex and charge the American taxpayer, according to new rules just issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Taxpayer-funded sex changes: They aren't just for traitors and illegal immigrants anymore!

HHS has ruled that it's "no longer reasonable" to expect older Americans to pay for their own sexual reassignments. Instead, it now recognizes the surgery as a "medically necessary" and "effective" treatment for people who can't come to grips with their own biological gender.

This policy, which private insurers are certain to imitate, gives patients the right to petition Medicare to cover their operations.

Family Research Council President, Tony Perkins wrote in his recent Washington Update: While President Obama is busy financing senior sex changes, wounded veterans are dying for lack of medical care. The move only paves the way for gender reassignment surgeries to be a routinely covered benefit -- like abortion.” Click here for FRC’s full analysis.

Science or Irrational Thuggery?

Cornwall Alliance
June 2014

The Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation, a coalition of theologians, pastors, ministry leaders, scientists, economists, policy experts, and committed laymen, made the statement in their recent blog: “The only thing that will ultimately win the day is a return to the Christian worldview, founded on rational revelation from a rational, God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—that gave birth to science and technology in the first place.”

The statement was part of their response to veteran Swedish climate scientist, Dr. Lennart Bengtsson, agreeing to serve as an adviser to a major think-tank that called for balanced research and reporting about climate. Dr. Bengtsson, for years, warned people about dangerous, man-made global warming but then began to publish his own doubts because observed temperatures weren't rising anywhere near as fast as the computer climate models predicted! Some of his former “comrades in alarms” have gotten very upset and angry with him. Click here to read the full story.
