April 2013 News and Happenings
Greetings! Check out what's happening on Motor Ave!

Motor Ave has been bustling with new activities and programs since our last newsletter. From a BikeFest to our weekly Farmers Market, to new restaurants opening up, we want you to stay informed!

"The BEST CicLAvia hub I saw was the Motor Ave BikeFest"  - Jonathan Parfrey, CicLAvia Board Vice President

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the First Annual Motor Ave BikeFest Sunday April 21st

Despite it being the BikeFest’s first year, we had a wildly successful event, hosting almost 10,000 people throughout the day. Participants ate at a dozen food trucks, enjoyed the freestyle bike show, multiple raffles, free beverages, and live music. We were extremely excited to see so many children out enjoying the event as well as its jumpers and pony rides. Motor Ave was a very popular destination along the CicLAvia route, and although there was a very large crowd throughout the day, with the help of DOT, LAPD, LAFD, Palms Cycle, and all of our vendors, we were able to keep the street exciting and safe. We look forward to expanding the Motor BikeFest in future years and hope for equal successes!

Farmers Market:
Fresh fruits and veggies, organic coffee, tamales, crepes, and more. The Motor Ave Farmers market is thriving and growing. We are very proud of the support of the local community as we continue to bring quality vendors and farmers to Motor every Sunday.

Last month Palms Elementary School attended the market with student performances by the Bollywood Dancers, Las Palmas Grupo Folkorico, the Drill Team and Palms Elementary Orchestra. Meet us every Sunday on Motor and National from 9am-2pm for quality food, goods, and entertainment. Don’t forget your reusable bags!

Community Garden:
The Motor Avenue Farmers Market has developed a community garden program to promote the health, synergy, and self-reliance of its local community. The program will feature a total of five gardens (with room for more) and will offer a variety of benefits including city beautification, preservation of green space, improved quality of life for neighbors, crime reduction, and improved food quality and nutrition.
We are extremely excited about this and hope you share in our enthusiasm. We strongly encourage your involvement in whatever capacity you see yourself fitting in. For more information, please contact us at Happy Gardening!

Bike Lane:
Motor Avenue is bicycle friendly! More and more bicyclists are taking advantage of the added bike lane and sharrows along Motor Avenue. Bicyclists can commute in their bike lane alongside automobile drivers, safely separated by a center median. Bike lanes are essential for the continued success of Motor Avenue. With the arrival of the EXPO line station on National and Motor in a few years, we expect this area of Palms to be transformed by encouraging a safe environment for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Traffic Calming Program:
Do you get stuck in northbound traffic on Motor every morning?
Have you received a ticket for making a northbound turn onto Motor from National?
Are you losing business because your customers can't access your store?
Can't get to your favorite local business?
Is traffic being diverted to your neighborhood?

"I live and work in the Motor Avenue/Palms area and I continuously get stuck in northbound traffic. Our community is tired of receiving tickets for making right or left turns onto Motor Avenue.  The local businesses are losing revenue because of the traffic restriction and I want action to be taken immediately. I want you to remove the traffic restrictions at National Boulevard and Motor Avenue."

Trash Cans:
The green trash cans lining Motor Ave continue to promote a cleaner street. The bins were acquired through the City of LA’s Adopt-a-Basket program. They are emptied weekly by Motor Ave Improvement Association as well as partnering businesses and are intended for public use. For this reason we ask that local residents and businesses are mindful not to dump private trash in the motor bins and instead use the dumpsters provided by their own building or business. With the help of the entire community, we can ensure that Motor Ave continues to be a clean street.

Business Update

El Nopal Restaurant: Under New Management
Authentic Oaxacan cuisine comes to Palms! The new El Nopal menu brings flavors of Oaxaca, Mexico and has yet to disappoint any Mexican food junkies. Sure you’re an LA native and think you know the ins and outs of Mexican food, but whether it’s one of their six mole options, the enfrijoladas, or molotes,  we are sure El Nopal will have something new for you.
