The Art & Science of Chance to Win Design

Greetings from UXPA Michigan!

The states' local User Experience groups have been relatively quiet during the pandemic, but the postponed in-person The Art & Science of “Chance to Win” Design event has gone virtual.

The Art & Science of "Chance to Win" Design with Adam Messing, Thursday, August 20th at 7pm (via Zoom)

  • Even the most basic sweepstakes have a surprising number of factors that make for a unique design puzzle to solve for each campaign.
  • You'll learn the basic structure and game mechanics of "chance to win" promotional design.
  • We will also engage in some general discussion including who's hiring, who's looking, event announcements, and more community news.

RSVP with the Detroit UX meetup, one of our partners for the event. You will need to join the meetup first if you are not already a member. Attendance is free but you need to RSVP to get the link to the Zoom meeting. Hurry, since the number of people is limited so that we can have good discussions. The event is also being organized by Ladies That UX Detroit.

The Michigan Automotive & Mobility UX meetup group is also doing an online event this month: UX Integrated Cockpit Solutions, 8/26, 11am.

The Mid-Michigan Agile meetup group has an event on 8/25 that may resonate with you: Checklists vs. Humanity, how to bring people together and how you can guide a team to have successful interactions.

Connecting online

With lots of local groups going online, there are many, many more talks and presentations you can attend online to learn about UX. The UXPA Los Angeles chapter does a good job of listing "Partner events" by other groups: join the UXPALA meetup group to see what they have listed. CPHUX (Copenhagen) is another good list that includes paid webinars. UX Stars keeps tracks of  livestream/podcast "discussion/Q&A" sessions.

One event this week that stands out is the Heartifacts Conference (by a group based in Pittsburgh), Wednesday-Saturday, August 12-15. It is focused on mental health issues for software professionals (including UX practitioners).

Some of our favorite places for events that are part of larger communities of practice:

Where have you been hanging out professionally during the pandemic? Send us an email listing your favorite "pandemic hangouts" so we can share with your UX colleagues in Michigan. Or post something in the UX Michigan Slack group (join it if you are not already a member).

Coming up for Michiganders

A lot of UX group and event organizers got together virtually in July to touch base, discuss ideas for the rest of the year, and start planning. A working list of things that are scheduled, in the works, or being considered:

Not all of these may come to fruition and some will change, of course. And others are still in the "idea stage". Stay tuned!

Also, some of our groups have undergone changes that you may not have heard about yet. The West Michigan Shores & Southeastern Michigan chapters of the Society for Technical Communication have merged. Our industrial design local chapter has changed from being state-based to city-based, IDSA Detroit.

Who's been doing what

Some of our colleagues have been "on the road" sharing what they know, or have upcoming talks scheduled.

We are sure others in the Michigan UX community have news to share! New jobs, start-up companies, and other professional achievements. Let us know via email so we can share in the next newsletter.
