Focus On Your Core

Content for the win | Vol. 4, No. 3

It's spring. Time to slim down for summer.

Have you looked lately at where you or your team is wasting time? Have you tried to eliminate wasteful practices? Like dieting, it's not easy to do, but the payoff is there for those who decide to run lean.

An example from my own business is a move to a "content only" position. Today, Bonehook doesn't take on website builds—we provide the strategic insight and copy that brings the site to life. The design and web development is handled by a partner firm.

There was a time not too long ago, when I wanted all the business we could get. This turned me into a project manager and account guy, and took me away from a focus on providing my core offering—copy that moves people to buy. Now, I know better.

How about you? What are you NOT doing to help grow your business?

  1. Listen to Flannery O'Connor read her short story, "A Good Man Is Hard To Find."
  2. Jay Baer believes that "blog consumption is a mix-tape now, not an album."
  3. The Bing cherry, among other varieties, was developed in Milwaukie, Oregon in 1875 by pioneering orchardist, Seth Lewelling.
  4. Tips on scaling a service business, including this tip: don't charge by the hour.
  5. Three independent labs tested several cheap wines and found that some contained levels of arsenic up to 500% or more than what is what is considered the safe daily intake limit.
  6. Someone you know may have Orthorexia nervosa, a.k.a., the health food eating disorder.
  7. Eight content marketing case studies c/o Neil Patel and Content Marketing Institute.
  8. Are you steering the conversation by asking the right kinds of questions, based on the problem you’re trying to solve?

Writing brand copy like designing a building; the purpose is utilitarian, but utility needn't be an impediment to artfulness.
