SCWIST Invited to House of Commons, Again!

Our secretary, Danniele Livengood, and past Director, Sandy Eix, travelled to Ottawa & presented to the Standing Committee on Status of Women. They spoke about the recent positive changes in the representation of women in the traditionally male-dominated STEM fields but more work still needs to be done. They convincingly pointed out 1) why GENDER DIVERSITY is important, 2) why work still needs to be done, 3) what we can do to improve, and 4) how SCWIST programs (ms infinity, IWIS and Make Possible) are part of the solution. Read more.

Continuing the Conversation Province-wide

We’re pleased to partner with Women’s Enterprise Centre on an exciting and collaborative event to provide dialogue, celebration and inspiration. Following on from the highly successful BC Economic Forum held in Vancouver in October 2014, the Catalyst for Growth Events combine a lively working forum, a networking lunch and world-renowned expert on overcoming the Impostor Syndrome, Dr. Valerie Young. We are bringing together community voices for economic growth and to equip business leaders with the skills to step up and be more effective.

The Catalyst for Growth Event is coming to Kelowna, Victoria, Prince George and Prince Rupert in May 2015. Women and men are welcome - join us to help advance the conversation into action strategies for growth! Seating is limited. Register today or learn more here.

STEMCELL is on board with SCWIST

Recently, BC’s largest biotech company, STEMCELL Technologies Inc., signed a 5-year sponsorship agreement with SCWIST.  Director, Janny Marie L Peterslund, met Dr. Allen Eaves, founder and CEO of STEMCELL, for a conversation about women in biotech and why a company like STEMCELL has women dominating the offices and meeting rooms. Read the conversation in special email next week!

Why Are You Involved With SCWIST?
I first heard of SCWIST in 2011 and attended its flagship networking event, the XX Evening. There, I met so many interesting and successful women that I knew SCWIST was an organisation I wanted to become more involved with. I initially volunteered to co-organise the Brown Bag events at UBC with Katja Dralle and Carolina Chanis, which was terrific because we were able to invite diverse women speakers to come and discuss relevant topics with our mixed audience of students, postdocs and faculty, and discussion was always very lively. Since 2013, I have been Director of Grants and have really enjoyed meeting the rest of the Board every month to chart SCWIST’s progress as an organisation and reach for our goals of furthering women in STEM, together. - Jane O-Hara, Director of Grants
