Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

We had another informative and interactive stress-busting event in ‪Hove‬ last week! It was fascinating to learn about two hands-on approaches coming from very different traditions yet with quite a few overlaps. As always, it was lovely to see a few new faces alongside some of the Hove StressBusters regulars - thank you all for being there, contributing to the lively discussion and participating in demonstrations. Drinks at the pub after the event were a perfect way to round off the evening, with more stimulating discussions and lots of laughs. :)
Last but not least, big thanks to our photographer Teo Andreadis, who ensured that for the first time in over a year we have event photos to be proud of!

Body Stress Release
When we hear the word 'stress', most of us will be thinking of mental stress and anxiety. However, this is just one aspect of stress. In an acute stress reaction, the 'fight or flight' response, our muscles tense up - this enables up to react and move quickly in order to overcome the acute threat to our survival. This is obviously a good thing - if we need to escape from a lion - but the stress that most of us commonly experience is very different.
One of the common misconceptions is that all stress is bad. In fact a small amount of stress is good as it helps us develop and strengthen our physical, mental and emotional capacity. What we need to avoid though is stress overload - the point where the amount of stress exceeds the individual's ability to cope. This overload point, obviously, differs from person to person, but when we reach it, our ability to cope with further stresses is decreased and this has a significant negative impact on our physical as well as emotional wellbeing.

Body Stress Release with Rob Petherick     Body Stress Release is a complementary health technique, developed by South African chiropractors. By helping release the tension stored in our muscles, it enables the body to heal from the impact of physical, emotional and chemical stressors we are exposed to. In this practical talk, Rob Petherick, the only Body Stress Release practitioner in Brighton & Hove (and also one of the few in the UK), presented the basic ideas behind this technique.
We are all designed to be self healing. However, when we reach the point of stress overload, the stress becomes locked into our muscles, which lie above the body's vital nerves. This disrupts the nervous system's communication with the brain, preventing the body from functioning at its optimum level and impairing the efficiency of the body's natural self-healing processes. This results in a number of symptoms: headaches/migraines, tense shoulders, stiff necks, pins and needles or numbness in the arms and legs, sciatica, cramps, digestive problems, lack of energy and depression.

Body Stress Release works by releasing the tension stored in the muscles. This allows the underlying nerve pathways to communicate properly with the brain, and as the muscles are no longer in a tightened state, allows natural healing to begin. It was so interesting to hear about the different clients that Rob has treated in his busy clinic. Not only did the symptoms for which they sought treatment disappear, but many of them also experienced unexpected improvements in other aspects of their physical and psychological wellbeing.
With the help of a volunteer (the very fortunate Mrs Petherick!), Rob demonstrated how he locates tension in the body and then releases it by applying brief pressure on specific points along the muscles. It was relaxing even just to watch what he was doing... Probably more than a few people in the audience wished that they were lying on the treatment couch at that particular moment!

Progressive Kinesiology
During the second half of the evening we had an opportunity to learn more about Kinesiology - a holistic approach which combines the basic principles of traditional Chinese medicine and the knowledge about the body’s subtle energy systems, with the more modern western techniques (e.g. muscle testing biofeedback, brain integration exercises).
Angela Abbott is an experienced practitioner of Progressive Kinesiology and very passionate about her work. She started off by explaining to us the basic principles behind this technique and how it can be used as a powerful and sophisticated tool for treating an individual in a completely holistic way - chemically, structurally, emotionally and electro-magnetically.
Like all branches of traditional Chinese medicine (e.g. Acupuncture, Qigong etc), Kinesiology is also based on the concept of life energy 'chi' or 'qi', which flows along the meridians in our body. When this flow is disrupted, we experience symptoms of dis-ease. Kinesiology uses muscle testing to detect these disbalances and indicate how to correct them.
Progressive Kinesiology with Angela Abbott    Angela explained and demonstrated how muscle testing can be used to accurately pinpoint where someone is out of balance and how, during the treatment, it is possible to find exactly which technique is required to return the individual to homeostasis. Working in pairs, we had lots of fun experiencing how our muscles can be used to detect emotional discomfort. It was quite mind-boggling and prompted lots of interesting discussion!
Angela also demonstrated a number of self-help techniques that can be used to help release stress from the mind and the body. We rubbed our ears (it's an area packed with acupressure points for the entire body), held our forheads and - perhaps the most amusing of all - vigorously rubbed the areas above and below our lips. All these techniques were so simple yet so effective, and most of us reported feeling more relaxed and clear-headed even after just a few minutes of doing them. See the handout for a description of these fantastic stress-busters!
While the validity of muscle testing is backed by a number of research studies, research into the clinical effectiveness of Kinesiology is still sparse - most likely due to the lack of funding and the general difficulty of systematically studying such an individually-tailored therapeutic approach. Yet the studies that have been performed to date as well as the testimonials of individuals whose life was transformed by Kinesiology suggest that this technique holds great potential for diagnosing disbalances and improving physical and psychological wellbeing. A great all-round stress-buster!

GOAL SETTING - KEEP IT SIMPLE! Some people may say that their goals are too complicated. OK… Keep your goals simple! I know… life is not simple, so the goals in our life are usually complex too. Perhaps you should start by making complex goals more understandable and achievable by breaking them down into smaller goals. Have you tried to break those ‘complex’ goals into group(s) of simple goal(s)? If you have, was it successful? What does it take to achieve a BIG goal? How many small steps do you need to take?
This process of simplifying the goals will also enable you to evaluate if your goal is realistic. If it isn’t (you’ll never be able to fly!), you might decide to abandon it. Alternatively, if it’s something that might be achieved but would take much longer than one year, identify the steps that can be achieved in the next year and work on them.
