Laughter Yoga
Laughter Yoga with Emma Hiwaizi      To describe it in just a few words, the Laughter Yoga session with Emma Hiwaizi was unbelievably fun, uplifting as well as a great bonding experience for the group. It may sound like common sense, but laughter is simply good for us. Not only does laughing give an instant boost to our mood, regular laughter boosts our immune system and it can actually help us to create a more positive outlook on life... Unlike many other approaches where you have to at least believe in the positive effects in order to fully benefit from practising them, Laughter Yoga is pretty much like ordinary physical exercise: the more you go to a gym, the more benefits you are going to see.
     At the start of the session, Emma explained an important point: you don't necessarily have to laugh because you find something funny, even pretending to laugh is going to have exactly the same benefits... in other words, 'Fake it until you make it!'. That really took the pressure off and we just started doing the exercises and playing the games that Emma initiated without expecting much. The awkwardness of doing a funny dance, singing silly chants or playing childish games lasted only a few minutes and we soon started to giggle and, at times, even howl with laughter. The session ended with a laughter meditation which left everyone in the group with a range of pleasant emotions and sentiments, including tranquillity, gratefulness, sleepiness, lightness, calmness… The brief assessment we conducted at the beginning and the end of the Laughter Yoga session confirmed that these improvements in mood were indeed statistically significant.
     Laughter Yoga is definitely a technique that needs to be experienced first-hand to understand what it's all about and how it can work wonders for everyone, regardless of their age, gender, physical ability, language, culture, etc. Brighton Laughter Club runs regular as well as one off sessions at various locations across Brighton and Hove, so come along to one of their events and you might just be hooked!

Empowerment Coaching: Tackling the Overwhelm
Empowerment Coaching with Katalin Swann     The overwhelm... Oh, yes, we've all been there! Procrastination is the greatest nemesis to many of us and we consequently feel overwhelmed with the prospect of too many impossible deadlines, an ever increasing 'to do' list and no time to enjoy life. As experts in self-sabotage (poor planning and time management, distractibility, etc.) we end up with far too many important things to do at the last minute and hence the high level of stress many of us tend to experience on a daily basis.
     The coaching session with Katalin Swann provided us with some incredible insights into the traps we set for ourselves which inevitably lead to that stressful and unhelpful feeling of overwhelm. Working through Katalin's handout, we were able to recognize our pitfalls and think of the ways to avoid them. There is so much to learn, so much to change and yet, by being placed in the position to observe our behavioural and thought patterns in this analytical way, the goal of overcoming procrastination becomes much more plausible.
     In addition to providing us with practical tools to tackle overwhelm, this session also helped clarify the concept of Life Coaching.
We were able to see that working with a qualified life coach is an experience very different from talking to a friend who gives good advice - it is a thought-provoking process which actively guides us towards finding solutions which are most optimal for our own specific circumstances, plans and desires. Working with a life coach is not just a process of addressing challenging situations; it is also a powerful tool for motivating, inspiring and encouraging us to transform our lives for the better.

ACTING 'AS IF' This is 'acting as if' something were true, such as imagining how you would act or feel if the change you want has already occurred, ie. as if you were already able to do something that you are not yet able to do. In other words, imagine yourself as if you have just achieved this desired outcome and then from that 'as if' state 'look back' at the course of action which enabled you to reach your goal. This exercise will help you to see the desired outcome more clearly and identify which steps you need to take in order to achieve it. In the situations where fear poses the main obstacle to change, placing yourself in an ‘as if’ moment, temporarily switches off the fear and allows you to dwell on the positive aspects of the future success.
