Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

Another fantastic Hove StressBusters event last week, with lots of information to take in, relaxing meditations as well as pure silliness and uncontrollable laughter...

Craniosacral Therapy

Deborah Brown, a biodynamic craniosacral therapist, presented the theory behind this effective healing system. Based on whacky experiments conducted at the beginning of the 20th century, Dr Sutherland, an osteopath, revealed that our cranial (skull) bones move all the time (poor Mrs Sutherland though, for having to put up with a husband who kept wearing a ridiculous skull cap!). Based on these observations, as well as on the serendipitous finding by Dr Upledger in the 1970s that cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid which surrounds our brain and spinal cord) has its own regular pulse, craniosacral therapy has evolved into a very complex art of healing.
Craniosacral Therapy with Debbie Brown     This therapeutic approach encompasses several different therapies, yet all of them are based around the idea of enabling the body to realign to its natural health, restoring motion and vitality. Like with many such empirically-based techniques, it is as yet not clear what the true mechanism of its effectiveness is, but many client reports as well as a few clinical outcome studies conducted until now confirm its benefits (visit for an overview of research studies).
In addition to explaining the origins of craniosacral therapy and its relevance to stress reduction, Debbie demonstrated to the group what a typical session might look like. Unfortunately, with this therapeutic approach, there is very little that can actually be observed by an outsider, so gaining first-hand experience is absolutely essential.
While giving individual tasters to the whole group may not have been feasible (only one of us was lucky enough to get onto Debbie’s couch last Wednesday!), we were able to appreciate the introspective aspect of this approach by experiencing a guided meditation which is commonly used during the craniosacral sessions and which in itself proved to be a great stress buster.
Laughter Yoga
Laughter Yoga with Emma Hiwaizi      To describe it in just a few words, the Laughter Yoga session with Emma Hiwaizi was unbelievably fun, uplifting as well as a great bonding experience for the group. It may sound like common sense, but laughter is simply good for us. Not only does laughing give an instant boost to our mood, regular laughter boosts our immune system and it can actually help us to create a more positive outlook on life... Unlike many other approaches where you have to at least believe in the positive effects in order to fully benefit from practising them, Laughter Yoga is pretty much like ordinary physical exercise: the more you go to a gym, the more benefits you are going to see. Some people find laughter yoga more awkward than others to begin with, but give it time, and you'll eventually be won over.
At the start of the session, Emma explained an important point: you don't necessarily have to laugh because you find something funny; even pretending to laugh is going to have exactly the same benefits... in other words, 'Fake it until you make it!'. That really took the pressure off and we just started doing the exercises and playing the games without expecting much. The awkwardness of doing a funny dance, singing silly chants or playing childish games lasted only a few minutes and we soon started to giggle and, at times, even howl with laughter. The session ended with a laughter meditation which left everyone in the group with a range of pleasant emotions and sentiments, including happiness, tranquility, gratitude, sleepiness, lightness, calmness…
Laughter Yoga is definitely a technique that needs to be experienced first-hand to understand what it's all about and how it can work wonders for everyone, regardless of their age, gender, physical ability, language, culture, etc. Brighton Laughter Club runs regular as well as one off sessions at various locations across Brighton and Hove, so come along to one of their events and you might just get hooked!

Mindfulness Programme

Mindfulness workshops & courses
WHY MINDFULNESS? Studies have shown that people who practice mindfulness are better able to relax, and have more control of their emotions. Meditation has been found to lower the levels of our stress hormone cortisol and to increase production of serotonin, the brain chemical which helps balance our mood and behaviour.

As many of you are already aware, our community stress management programme includes monthly Mindfulness workshops run by Jo Turner. These drop-in sessions take place on the last Monday of every month @ 7.30pm - 9.30pm and are suitable for beginners as well as for those who wish to practise and extend their existing mindfulness skills.

The 6 week Mindfulness course ended earlier this week. It's been a great course and it became such a lovely friendly group with everyone sharing their mindful and sometimes not mindful experiences each week. The next 6 week course starts on the 11th of September. In order to encourage interaction and allow plenty of time for discussion in a small group setting, spaces on Jo's courses are limited to maximum 12 participants. See our website for more info and to book (early bird price applies until 31st July).

Quite a few of you have asked us to organize a day-long workshop on a weekend, for a more immersive mindfulness experience.  We have just finalized the date for the first Mindfulness, Meditation & Relaxation retreat day. It's going to take place on Saturday 15th of November at the Cornerstone Centre in Hove, so pencil in the date into your diaries. More info coming soon...

Stress Busting Library

The 'Happy Pill' The emergence of Prozac, the brand name for the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine, in the late 1980’s has marked a revolution in the treatment of depression and other related disorders. Unlike its predecessors, the tricyclic antidepressants and MAO Inhibitors, which were for decades the only available antidepressant drugs, Prozac is not just a name familiar only to the long-suffering patients and their relatives – it became an über-brand, part of the mainstream vocabulary, a symbol of the quick-fix culture. ... Read more

EFT: Tapping the Stress Away

Monday 21st July @ 7.30pm-9.00pm

@ Cornerstone Community Centre, Hove
Self-coaching workshop with Benita Scott

Come along to our next meeting where we will tackle stress by using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
Described very simply, EFT involves tapping gently on energy points (mainly on the face and neck area) with our fingertips whilst repeating key phrases that best describe our issue. When we acknowledge how we feel about the issue and accept it instead of fighting it, we come to experience a positive transformation.
             Drop-in, £10                                       More information
Limited number of places so pre-booking is strongly advised.
Tip of the Month

Empowerment Life & Business Coach)

WHAT YOU DO TODAY HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR PRESENT BUT IT WILL ALSO SEAL THE FATE OF YOUR FUTURE. The choices you make each day determine what lies ahead of you. It therefore serves you well if you make empowered choices where you embark on something new, complete what you have been postponing to do for a long time, seek opportunities and take the action that you have been afraid to take. Living each day as how you imagine your future self to be, in other words making the choices that your future self would make and courageously take action, will lead you toward a great future.
