Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

August is a quiet month for the Hove StressBusters but before our well-deserved summer break, we had another stimulating, enjoyable and uplifting evening last week.

The Power of Breathing

     In her informative and inspiring talk, Nicola Price, the founder of Inspirational Breathing, introduced us to the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of breathing and the healing potential of breathwork.
     By performing a breath pattern analysis on a volunteer, Nicola made us aware of the different breathing 'issues' that many of us display. In fact, research shows that most people use a mere 25% of their breathing capacity. People tend to breathe just from the top of their chest or only in their belly, whereas the optimal breath needs to engage our entire respiratory system, the belly and the chest, right down from the bottom all the way to the top. 
     The essence of Inspirational Breathing is practising the so-called 'baby breath' or continuous diaphragmatic breath. Learning how to breathe in this fashion and practising it regularly, will not only enhance the oxygenation of our cells, but it can also enable us to connect to our body, release stuck and suppressed emotions, and enhance our mood and energy levels. A number of research studies have documented a variety of physical and psychological benefits of such sustained diaphragmatic breathing practice, including reduction in stress, tension and migraine, and enhanced wellbeing and creativity. Breathwork is also used to raise the vibration of energy enabling us to achieve higher consciousness. 

The Power of Breathing with Nicola Price     At first, trying to do this 'breathing meditation' proved to be quite difficult... it just doesn't come naturally: we're used to pausing between breaths and breathing through our nose (breathing through the mouth can be somewhat unpleasant). But then Nicola got us to do something none of us were expecting: she got us to stretch and dance to some irresistible music. Just two minutes of bouncing about the room (hot coals!) were enough to raise our spirits and make the subsequent breathing meditation so much easier and natural. Nicola's unique combination of movement, stretching and breathing meditation - what she calls Yogagroov - is really an ideal way to introduce people to the power of breathing: an opportunity to explore the breath and discover where the physical and emotional resistance lies... and have loads of fun along the way!
 
Matrix Re-Imprinting
      Most people interested in personal development and alternative approaches to wellbeing would have heard of the Emotional Healing Technique (EFT) which dissolves negative emotions by tapping at different energy points on the body. In fact, EFT has been the topic of several Hove StressBusters talk & demo events and, more recently, we ran two EFT-based Stress & Anxiety Self-Coaching Group sessions. It is therefore not surprising that we were so eager to find out more about Matrix Re-Imprinting, a therapeutic approach derived from EFT.
Matrix Re-Imprinting with Benita Scott     Benita Scott, an EFT and Matrix Re-Imprinting Practitioner, started off by introducing us to the ideas behind EFT and teaching us the basic tapping sequence. She then went on to introduce and demonstrate Matrix Re-Imprinting, the technique developed by her teacher, EFT Master Karl Dawson. This fascinating technique merges EFT with the concepts from quantum physics and epigenetics. It is based on the idea that we hold traumas and stressful life experiences - both those from our own past as well as probably our ancestors' too - as pictures or holograms in the energy field which is all around us (our 'body-field' or matrix). We 
keep tuning into these pictures on a subconscious level so that they keep affecting our present thoughts and actions, our health and wellbeing. These pictures from the past also affect our 'point of attraction', so we keep attracting similar negative experiences.
     Working with two volunteers, Benita demonstrated how this technique can be used to help clients clear many of their deep-set patterns and issues by disentangling the complex network of memories, identifying the stressful experiences from their past and letting go of the negative energy attached to these experiences. While EFT takes the emotional intensity out of memories so that they no longer have the sufficient 'charge' to impact on our present self, Matrix Re-Imprinting goes a step further: it accesses the subconscious memories in order to transform them and create more resourceful states. This approach has been used to resolve trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction, pain and physical illness. As Benita pointed out, changing the memory of past traumas is not the same as denying they ever happened, but it frees us from the influence such experiences - often unbeknownst to us - have on our present and future.

REM Induction Therapy Study
3 FREE Rapid Eye Movement Induction Therapy (REMitâ„¢) and/or NLP sessions are offered as part of a new randomized controlled study conducted by Dr Jelena Nesic (INNERNATION Coaching & Development) and Dr Susan Sullivan (University of Sussex). This study aims to validate and extend the REMitâ„¢ method, a novel therapeutic approach which combines NLPWingwave Coaching and hypnosis techniques. The study is open to volunteers who wish to address specific anxiety-related issues, including fears, phobias and mental blocks.

Stress and sleep problems go hand in hand... Stressful situations, whether they are major problems/losses or minor daily hassle, often keep us awake at night as we constantly ruminate over them. Conversely, lack of sleep or an irregular sleep pattern (e.g. having a baby or working night shifts) can make us stressed and more prone to negative mood during the day. ARE YOU BEING MINDLESS OR MINDFUL?

Jo TurnerThe Hove StressBusters Mindfulness programme is run by Jo TurnerMindful i- and SMART-accredited Relaxation, Meditation & Mindfulness instructor. Jo's approach to teaching mindfulness is relaxed, practical, experimental and sometimes humorous. She encourages people to find the mindfulness route that works for them and gives them the confidence and experience to be able to practise mindfulness on their own.

This 6-week Mindfulness course is designed to help people engage with their own well-being and become more effective at managing stress and their emotions. The 90 minutes long weekly sessions consist of gentle guided meditation practices within a safe group setting to cultivate awareness of moment to moment experience. Group members are invited to share experiences in pairs and small groups, although this is not essential and there is no pressure to talk. The development of a regular home practice is encouraged to deepen formal and informal practices with suggested mindfulness and meditation resources, and a course handbook.

'Participating in a mindfulness meditation program makes measurable changes in  brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress.' 

Course fee: £125 / £77 conc.

The group size is kept small (maximum 12 participants) in order to encourage reflection and discussion in an intimate setting
