Brighton StressBusters Having taken a break in August to recharge our batteries, enjoy the  summer and work on some exciting new developments in our programme, we were back at the Hanover Centre last week, full of pep and ready for more stress-busting action. From talks and demonstrations of different wellbeing approaches giving you tools to reduce your stress level, to classes, workshops and courses, we have many more exciting events in store for you this autumn!

Brighton StressBusters Talks & Demos

Lovely to see everyone last Friday at our monthly talk & demo evening - a very chatty group of newbies and StressBusters regulars, all keen to discover two (well, actually three) different yet equally fascinating therapeutic approaches. Big thanks to our speakers for such engaging talks and demonstrations! As always, we had some really stimulating discussions, both during the event and at the pub afterwards. Emotional Freedom Technique & Ho'oponopono
     Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) rests on the assumption that certain events or life situations cause disruptions in our body's energy system, leading to physical pain, disease or mental illness. Described very simply, EFT involves tapping gently on energy points (mainly on the face and neck area) with our fingertips whilst repeating key phrases that best describe our issue. When we acknowledge how we feel about the issue and accept it instead of fighting it, we come to experience a positive transformation.

     While coming from a very different tradition, these basic ideas of acknowledgement and acceptance that lie behind EFT resonate very strongly with the traditional Hawaiian healing approach called Ho'oponopono. According to Ho'oponopono, our outer world is a reflection of our inner world. By taking responsibility and asking forgiveness for our part in any event in our lives (including our relationships), we let go of the blame and resentment and take the first step towards recovery. This is not about letting others who have harmed us off the hook, but it's about empowering ourselves and taking back control of our life and our ability to heal.
EFT & Ho'oponopono with John Blosse     John Blosse, an EFT Master Practitioner, Matrix Re-imprinting Practitioner and Emotrance Therapist, introduced us to these two healing approacheas which he started combining in his therapy practice a few years ago and is now using increasingly more often and with great results. He finds Ho'oponopono to be a powerful method for resolving negative emotions, memories, trauma and beliefs that are impacting on our present and future. Located in our subconscious, these unresolved issues act as filters, biasing our experience of the present and limiting our life choices. Only by recognising and accepting these issues, we come to experience a positive transformation.
     The beauty of Ho'oponopono lies in its simplicity - the approach is based on four very simple phrases: I’m Sorry, Please Forgive Me, I Love You, and Thank You. This simple healing mantra can be applied in everyday situations to reduce our stress levels and the more we apply it, the stronger the effects. It was interesting to hear not just about John's own experiences of this method, but also from several members of the audience.
     The principles of Ho'oponopono can be interpreted at both psychological and spiritual levels and we had some very interesting discussions both during and after John's talk. But whichever interpretation we choose and whomever we are addressing when uttering these healing phrases (God, the Divine, Energy of Creation, Superconscious, etc.) the bottom line is that WE are the ones saying these words and WE are also the ones hearing them. How often do we say any of those kind words to ourselves? Very powerful words indeed...

Acupuncture: It's far more than needles!
     Acupuncture is a system of healing that has been used in China and the Far East for thousands of years. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the smooth flow of our body’s energy. This life energy, referred to as Qi, can easily become disturbed or imbalanced and there are many aspects to people’s lives which cause these imbalances. Acupuncture aims to address the imbalances using the insertion of very fine needles along the channels of the body encouraging the body to return to a state of balance and health.
     But acupuncture treatment involves much more than just this 'needle-work'... A familiar face at our events, Ian Stones is an experienced acupuncturist and one of the founding members of the Zita West fertility network. In this engaging talk he presented an overview of all the different aspects of the traditional Chinese medicine approach to health, starting from lifestyle advice, diet, exercise (such as Qigong) and a special massage technique called Tui Na, leading to herbal therapy and, only as the last resort, acupuncture.
Acupuncture with Ian Stones     After showing a brief video that summarizes really well what this ancient Chinese healing system is all about, Ian set out to dispel some myths and fears by showing what an acupuncture treatment actually involves. He explained in detail all the different aspects of acupuncture treatment, from the initial consultation to diagnosis and intervention. He also discussed the different approaches to treating a wide range of clinical conditions, illustrating his points with interesting case studies from his clinical practice. After a very stimulating discussion, and some kiwi-acupuncture (!), we were all keen to jump up at the end and get a tongue diagnosis!

     Acupuncture is always focused on the individual rather than just their main complaint: the symptoms are viewed within the wider context of the patient's entire medical history, physical and emotional wellbeing, diet and lifestyle. Because every patient is unique, two people with the identical Western diagnosis will each receive different acupuncture treatments. This is why acupuncture done in hospital settings by specially trained medical staff (NOT professional acupuncturists), or during controlled clinical trials, is very rarely effective: instead of determining insertion points for each individual patient, a specific protocol of needle insertion is always followed for that particular health complaint. We hope that over the coming years, as the medical community is beginning to recognise and accept acupuncture as an effective complementary treatment, the quality of research studies as well as clinical interventions available via NHS will improve!

The Trouble With Relationships      We yearn to experience satisfying, joyous or productive relationships. What makes them satisfying is a personal question which depends on one’s own learning, beliefs and past experiences. But we all want to feel valued through these interactions; to feel special, important, loved or appreciated.
     Because it is our nature to constantly learn and evolve, we enjoy those relationships which inspire or teach us new things, provide us with lessons, or empower us and strengthen our self-worth and belief. Aromatherapy Tips of the Month
 
ROSEMARY Stimulating, invigorating and vibrant, rosemary is good for poor concentration and memory, mental fatigue and depression. Do not use during the evening or if you have high blood pressure or epilepsy.

How to use essential oils:
BATH Put 4-6 drops of essential oil into a teaspoon of oil. Add to the bath once the water has finished running
MASSAGE Mix a maximum of 5 drops of the essential oil into 10ml of carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or vegetable oil. Rub into arms, neck and temples.
VAPORISER Add 3-6 drops to water to fragrance a room.
