Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

Lovely to see so many of you last week at our monthly stress-busting event in Hove. Big thanks to our wonderful speakers who introduced two powerful approaches to stress management - Functional Nutrition and Transcendental Meditation. With many practical nutritional tips for helping support our body through everyday stressful challenges, to getting a pretty good idea of what the transcendental state is without actually experiencing it, there was a lot to learn and discuss. As always, it was great to catch up with the usual suspects (and get to know several 'newbies' too) at the pub afterwards - some really thought-provoking chats! Have a great month everyone and hope to catch up with you soon at one of our upcoming events!
Functional Nutrition
Millie Ferguson is passionate about her work. As a qualified Nutritional Therapist, she teaches people how to restore balance and support their body in dealing with the everyday stressful challenges that are an inevitable part of the modern life. Her work is focused both on prevention of disease and on supporting individuals who suffer from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, dementia, heart disease, chronic fatigue and osteoporosis.
During the talk we gained an insight into the complex interaction between our brain, endocrine and immune functions. Any stressors - be they physical, emotional, social or chemical - can throw us out of balance. The great thing is that our body and brain are quite robust and can usually maintain balance quite easily. However, with too much stress and not enough self-care, many of us experience a chronic disbalance which leads to a reduction in our energy levels, impaired cognition and emotional regulation, and minor or major illnesses.

Nutritional Therapy with Millie Ferguson
Millie's talk provoked a lively discussion of the dos and don'ts of a healthy lifestyle, busting many common myths. It was very interesting to observe how easy it is to get the recommended 5-a-day of fruit and veg: she got us to pick the vegetables that we might use in a single meal (she brought a selection of vegetables - a lovely display!) and then weighed them to show us how well we're doing. It turns out - perhaps not surprisingly - that the StressBusters audience comprises of quite healthy eaters! :)
Probably the most intriguing part of the evening was the demonstration of a machine which evaluates body fat composition... A device short of a true miracle! This is just a one of the physiological assessments that a nutritional therapist might perform in order to evaluate specific metabolic needs of a client. Once the client's detailed health background is established, as well as their current lifestyle, Millie's job is to guide her clients in the process of adjusting their lifestyle and diet in order to restore their metabolic balance, and achieve optimum weight and bundles of energy. And the best thing is that it's not about excluding everything you like from your diet - the approach is very balanced and, most importantly enjoyable!

Transcendental Meditation
Transcendental Meditation - TM for short - is a well known technique originating from India, which found its way into the West in 1960s. Once it was endorsed by the Beatles and other famous contemporaries, it became an instant hit, and its popularity hasn't waned since.
For a long time we have been keen to include this powerful approach in our stress-busting programme, so it was a great pleasure to have Mark Heath, the chair of Brighton & Hove Transcendental Meditation Centre and a TM teacher with over 20 years of experience, join our group and give a talk on this topic.

Transcendental Meditation is a technique which allows the active conscious mind to experience progressively quieter and more refined levels of thinking until it ultimately becomes silent, still, and at rest. When the mind becomes more peaceful, so does the body. As a result, any deep seated stress, tension and fatigue is naturally released from the system.  Unlike methods or techniques which may involve control, or concentration, TM is almost effortless. It does not involve watching thoughts, or the breath, either.
Transcendental Meditation with Mark Heath     While it wasn't possible to give a taster of the actual experience of a transcendental state (in Mark's words, it would be like a travel agent trying to give you a taster of a holiday in the Caribbean), he really lived up to the challenge and managed to convey to us so well what this experience might be like.
TM utilises the built in tendency of the mind to seek more charm, more fulfilment, more freedom. In nature, life is structured in layers, from the gross down to the subtle. The mind is no different. On the surface it is active, like waves on the ocean. As you dive to the depths, activity becomes less and less. Thoughts arise from the depths of the mind, like bubbles coming up from the seabed. TM is a method to dive deep into the mind, experience its peace, its creativity and intelligence, then draw those qualities out into the world. As a result, one becomes more calm, more clear, more centred. Decision making is easier, stress becomes less and life becomes more fulfilling.
This technique is practised by millions across the world and a stunning amount of research has been conducted to evaluate its benefits. Much more research, in fact, than for most other non-mainstream wellbeing approaches. Most likely this extensive investment in research is in part due to the fact that TM is endorsed by many US celebrities, such as David Lynch and Hugh Jackman, and there a number of charitable foundations which are dedicated to bringing TM to a wide variety of settings, from schools to prisons. It's certainly one of those approaches that need to be experienced first-hand in order to be appreciated fully.

Stress-Busting Tip of the Month
by Em Burnett
Tai Chi, Qigong & Neigong Instructor)

Being in natural environments helps to shift our awareness to 'the bigger picture', allowing the relaxation response space to manifest - we may find our breath adjusts to a deeper slower rhythm, our face and shoulders soften, the air caresses our skin and we feel our feet and become more rooted.
This becomes even more of a pleasure as we move through Spring, walking barefoot on grass, letting our eyes take in the whole of our surroundings (opening up our peripheral vision) and opening ourselves up to the abundance of sounds and sensations.
Make the most of this flourishing season of new growth and activity by dipping into natural spaces wherever you can: looking out of the window, taking five to sit in a park or altering your route home to look out to sea.
