Mindfulness NewsHove StressBusters Mindfulness

We had another stimulating Mindfulness workshop in April, practising several formal meditations as well as discussing many different ways of introducing mindfulness into our daily activities.
It was hard to say goodbye to Jo Turner who has been with the Hove StressBusters for over 3 years now and running our Mindfulness programme since Janua
ry 2014 - good luck with your new ventures, Jo! We are, however, very pleased to welcome another experienced Mindfulness instructor to our ranks, Wendy Guest, who comes highly recommended to us by the SMARTfoundations.
Wendy Guest - Mindfulness, Meditation & Relaxation Instructor     Wendy's experience in facilitating groups ensures that her mindfulness sessions are friendly and relaxed and tailored to participants' needs. With her warm-hearted approach, she enables learners to explore and find their own way in developing their mindful practice with kindness and patience.
Wendy will take over from Jo and continue running our mindfulness sessions at the Cornerstone from June. We have already started taking bookings for the next 6 week course
- places are limited to 10 participants, so early booking is advised.

WHY MINDFULNESS? Studies have shown that people who practice mindfulness are better able to relax, and have more control of their emotions. Meditation has been found to lower the levels of our stress hormone cortisol and to increase production of serotonin, the brain chemical which helps balance our mood and behaviour.

Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

Another inspiring Hove StressBusters event last week, covering three huge topics: consciousness, death and families. Catching up with many of you at the pub afterwards was a perfect way to wrap up the evening...

Aspects of Consciousness: The Death Doula's perspective
Many of you know Benita Scott, one of our EFT and Matrix Re-Imprinting practitioners. But this time we invited Benita to talk about an entirely different approach: we were very intrigued to hear about the Death Doula work that she recently trained to do. Death is a topic that brings fascination and fear - almost in equal measures - so the idea of a person devoting themselves to helping the dying and their families is intriguing to say the least. And considering that Benita's training involves learning about consciousness and death from different religious, philosophical and scientific perspectives, we knew that this would be a fascinating talk!
The Death Doula: Aspects of Consciousness - with Benita Scott     Benita introduced the talk with an example of some of the work she did last year at the Martlets hospice with a client diagnosed with a terminal illness. Working with him and enabling him to find acceptance is a pivotal part of being a Death Doula or indeed any kind of therapy.
To most of us death is a concept very difficult to imagine - even if we had encountered death of our loved ones, the idea of our own death is so foreign to us. We can all therefore appreciate that accepting impending death is an extremely challenging thing to do. F
urthermore it is important to acknowledge that grief often happens before death - the anticipatory grief - and it is experienced by the family and the main client. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, a psychiatrist and pioneer in the study of death-related phenomena, first delineated the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. In her work, both with the dying and with their families, Benita's role is to support clients in their transition through these different stages.
However, as Benita pointed out, acceptance is something that most of us struggle with even with the things that are far less threatening than death.  We can all find ourselves stuck at any point in our lives and how we move through this and adjust ourselves is part of our conscious evolution. Kubler-Ross' grieving process can therefore also be used to analyse other stuck or hard to shift emotions.

Kubler- Ross stated that not all people reach the final stage of acceptance but it is Benita's belief that it is possible to facilitate this process through increasing the understanding of how the body and mind die and that we die in a beautifully engineered, naturally ordered way. Our best clues as to how we die come from near death experiences (NDEs), scientific observations, religious ideas and cultural interpretations. We looked at the top five (NDEs) and compared and contrasted what might be happening from the differing perspectives of science, religion and anecdotal evidence. Benita also contrasted the theories of consciousness from Freud to Descartes and recognized the distortions that can occur through perceptions, fears, drugs, toxins and beliefs.
Benita's talk ended with a group discussion and we all shared many interesting thoughts, observations and personal experiences. We may not be any closer to understanding consciousness and what really happens after we die, but this talk really helped put our lives and daily problems into a much wider perspective. Real food for thought...

Family Constellations
Family Constellations is an experiential process derived from psychotherapeutic approaches such as psychodrama; however, it went beyond the mainstream psychotherapy, incorporating the concept of 'systemic entanglement', the idea that there is a relationship between past and present events which is not caused by direct personal experience. The problem with trying to describe the Family Constellations approach is that no words can actually convey the experience of participating in a workshop.
The only way to fully understand this approach is through first-hand experience, be it as an issue holder (the person whose constellation is being modeled), a representative, or an observer.
Liz Sleeper, the founder of Sussex Constellations, gave a very brief introduction, stating just the main premises of this approach: that all individuals have a place in the family and that our fate is inextricably linked to the fate of our ancestors. By using other people to stand in as 'representatives' to model the issue holder's circumstances, the work enables hidden truths and loyalties to be recognised. Family Constellations thus help individuals to see relationships in a much wider context and bring sense to confusing or baffling behaviours - either their own or of other family members. This approach both liberates the issue ho from feeling responsible for issues that are not theirs, and also enables them to take responsibility for issues that are theirs and theirs alone.
Following Liz's introduction, our Tai Chi and Qigong instructor Em Burnett guided the group into a calm meditative state. Such guided meditations are commonly performed at the start of every Family Constellations workshop, to help the participants relax and 'arrive' into the room, leaving the everyday hustle behind them. By the end of this brief meditation, we were all eager to begin a constellations demo!

Family Constellations with Liz Sleeper     With the help of volunteers, Liz facilitated a brief constellation in such a sensitive, respectful and skillful way, bringing so much depth and warmth to the process. The resulting interaction between the participants in the constellation was very surprising and moving, not just for the participants themselves, but for the observers too. In fact, in workshops, representatives often get as much out of the process as the person whose family constellation they are modelling (the issue holder).
Participants and observers in Family Constellations workshops frequently find the work profoundly enlightening and healing, and some even compare its effectiveness to many years of psychotherapy. The workshops evoke a lot of emotions and can, at times, be quite stressful, but the long-term effect is that of centredness, inner peace and the resolution of stressful conflicts.
Liz currently runs workshops once a month in Lewes and Brighton - visit her Eventbrite page for more info. She is also hoping to start running some evening workshops as part of our community programme at the Cornerstone Centre later on this year. We'll keep you posted!

Stress-Busting Tip of the Month

Phone a friend...PHONE A FRIEND  From time to time we can all get stressed and there is so much good advice on how to tackle it. Starting from taking deep breaths, doing visualisation exercises to reading a poem, or anything from being physically active to meditating, eating healthy snacks (mindfully) and so on. Let’s try a different approach: let’s turn stress into our friend!
One thing that most of us disregard is that the physiological stress reaction isn’t all bad. The good news is that, amidst all the adrenaline, cortisol and other hormones that help us fight or flee but also have negative effects on our body and emotions, another hormone is also released during a stress episode. This is oxytocin, often called the ‘cuddle hormone’ because it primes the strengthening of close relationships. So, when you’re stressed, simply call a friend and arrange to meet up – chatting over the phone is good, but isn’t a substitute for face-to-face contact. Not only will seeing your friend help decrease your stress level by giving you a chance to unburden, get a different perspective on the problem or simply take your mind off it altogether, but it will be a great bonding experience too.
