Brighton StressBusters Talks & Demos

     What an interesting and inspirational ‪event at the Hanover Centre last Friday! Thanks to everyone who came, choosing to forsake all the exciting Festival happenings and spend an evening learning to see things from a different perspective, meeting new people and taking part in the demonstrations. We look forward to seeing you all again in June :)

Sedona Method
    Maya Zack, a hypnotherapist and one of the few Sedona Method practitioners in the UK, gave a very informative talk introducing this powerful self-development method and the ideas behind it.

     The basic concept is really rather simple: by saying things such as “I am unhappy” or “I am anxious”, we identify ourselves with these emotions which makes it impossible to separate ourselves from them. In contrast, if we say “I am feeling unhappy” or “I am feeling anxious”, it becomes clear that we are talking about emotions that we are currently experiencing and, as such, we can look upon them as objects that we can either keep or throw away – it is entirely our choice what we do with them.
Sedona Method with Maya Zack     The Sedona Method applies this approach of objectifying our emotions and uses a set of questions to challenge our determination to hold on to these ‘emotional bubbles’.

     Maya demonstrated the technique to the group - it seemed really simple and easy to learn, a set of questions that we need to ask ourselves in order to experience a profound change in our attachment to negative emotions and the limiting beliefs that are holding us back in life.
     We all worked on our own negative emotions (there was no need to share it, everyone just focused a particular emotion they wanted to resolve) and, after going through a set of questions with Maya, these emotions were minimized and several people reported an almost physical sensation of empty space in their chest and stomach which was previously occupied with unpleasant tension related to the negative emotion.
     Some of the Sedona questions even made us laugh – it does feel really ridiculous when you realize that you are holding on to something which is rather unpleasant and yet, for no logical reason at all, you stubbornly keep holding on to it!

Family Constellations
     Family Constellations is an experiential process derived from psychotherapeutic approaches such as psychodrama; however, it went beyond the mainstream psychotherapy, incorporating the concept of 'systemic entanglement', the idea that there is a relationship between past and present events which is not caused by direct personal experience.
     Liz Sleeper, the founder of Sussex Constellations, gave a very brief introduction, stating just the main premises of this approach: that all individuals have a place in the family and that our fate is inextricably linked to the fate of our ancestors. By using other people to stand in as 'representatives' to model the issue holder's circumstances, the work enables hidden truths and loyalties to be recognised.
     Family Constellations thus help individuals to see relationships in a much wider context and bring sense to confusing or baffling behaviours - either their own or of other family members. This approach both liberates the issue holder from feeling responsible for issues that are not theirs, and also enables them to take responsibility for issues that are theirs and theirs alone.

Family Constellations with Liz Sleeper     The problem with trying to describe the Family Constellations approach is that no words can actually convey the experience of participating in a workshop. The only way to fully understand this approach is through first-hand experience, be it as an issue holder (the person whose constellation is being modeled), a representative, or an observer.
     With the help of volunteers, Liz facilitated a brief constellation in such a sensitive, respectful and skillful way, bringing so much depth and warmth to the process. The resulting interaction between the participants in the constellation was very surprising and moving. And we were able to understand how representatives in workshops often get as much out of the process as the person whose family constellation they are modelling (i.e. the issue holder).
      Participants and observers in Family Constellations workshops frequently find the work profoundly enlightening and healing, and some even compare its effectiveness to many years of psychotherapy. The workshops evoke a lot of emotions and can, at times, be quite stressful, but the long-term effect is that of centredness, inner peace and the resolution of stressful conflicts.

     Liz currently runs evening workshops once a month as part of the Hove StressBusters programme at the Cornerstone Centre, as well as day-long monthly workshops in Lewes.

ACTING 'AS IF'  This is 'acting as if' something were true, such as imagining how you would act or feel if the change you want has already occurred, ie. as if you were already able to do something that you are not yet able to do. In other words, imagine yourself as if you have just achieved this desired outcome and then from that 'as if' state 'look back' at the course of action which enabled you to reach your goal. This exercise will help you to see the desired outcome more clearly and identify which steps you need to take in order to achieve it. In the situations where fear poses the main obstacle to change, placing yourself in an ‘as if’ moment, temporarily switches off the fear and allows you to dwell on the positive aspects of the future success.
